2nd Gen gas tank

this is a stupid question but I get a different answer from every person I ask.. How many gallons is my fuel tank? 19904runner, 5Speed

I even called my dealership and they told me I need the owners manual. I am the 4th owner of this truck, the owners manual is long gone

ChickenLover 02-24-2005 10:21 AM

My 2nd gen will hold 18 gallons.

KevyWevy 02-24-2005 10:25 AM

my owners manual said 17.4 so yeah, 18ish

Flamedx4 02-24-2005 11:04 AM

and don't forget, unless you run out of gas and then fill it all the way to the neck, you will never put 17.4 in it at the pump. You shouldn't be obsessing about stuff like that anyway, you should be havin fun!

sherri_girl 02-24-2005 11:05 AM

ok, so my gas gauge is messed up then because if I run it until the low fuel light goes on, I fill it up and only 14 gallons goes in - or is that right, there's like 4 gallons in "reserve" when that light goes on?

well not really obsessing but I was just trying to figure out my MPG

EDIT: also I was confused because I got so many different answers, some people said 15, some said 16 and some said 18

You don't need the gas tank size for mpg, just fill it up, check the odometer, drive and fill it up again. Divide the number of miles by the number of gallons you put in the second time = mpg.

And with all the lift, tires etc you have you may not want to know the answer :)

The FSM lists 2 fuel tanks for 84-93, 14.8 and 17.2 gal, and for 94-96 17.2 and 18.8 gal. So you have one of those 3, maybe.

sherri_girl 02-24-2005 11:27 AM

I know I dont need the gas tank size, but I got just got curious after I got three different answers to what I thoght was a simple question. So after a while it bugged me and I just had to know.

I also wanted to know because my b/f was driving my truck one day and the light came on so he wanted to know how much gas was still in the tank when the light goes on and I have no clue.

I dont really care what my MPG is in general, but Im doing a "test" of sorts between 2 different brands of fuel. It might be my imagination, but one brand is giving me more power and better MPG so it seems. And yes I know all fuels are the same, just the additives are different. It seems my truck prefers one over the other though.

I've always wondered too.. my truck doesn't have a low fuel light, but when the gauge was the lowest it's ever been it only took 12.1 gal.

Jeffires 02-24-2005 11:41 AM

my 91 truck manual says 19.3 for all except standard cab which is 17.2. I've run out and put a little over 18 gal. in mine, but normally I put about 17.

gee those seem like weird cut offs points in the years. :dunno:

well thanks for the help. Maybe one of these days I'll get the right answer

KevyWevy 02-24-2005 11:59 AM

hahahaha whith my 17.4 tank when my fuel light worked, i would only get 14 gallons in as well. so my guess is that you have the 17.4 or 17.2 (my owners manual said 17.4 so thats what im goin with)

lol- I just happened to have a brochure (like the ones in the dealership) by my computer. I don't even have a warning light, I just put gas in after it gets below 1/4. I think I get about 14 in town and close to 17 on hiway. I'm like you though, I really don't care about MPG- if I have to go on a long trip, I borrow my sisters Accord. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/images/smilies/grin.gif

Cool, that sounds good enough for me. Thank you much :great:

DUBKEITH 02-24-2005 01:17 PM

Now this has gotten me thinking now. I get say 190 miles to a tank before it is past empty. When i fill up after going that low i put in almost everytime 14.6 gallons. Now i don't know if i have the 14.8 or the 17.2 tank. If its the 14.8 i must be on fumes. If I have the 17.2 i still have 10 liters left.

Any way of knowing what tank is in my runner?

Cheers,
Keith

4RunnerKid 02-24-2005 01:24 PM

Yeah Sherri, mine is 17.something too. Good luck in your search. I know my manual says 31"-equipped and 225-equipped Runners have different sizes, so...

Flamedx4 02-24-2005 01:30 PM

Generally, you can never get the rated capacity in. There is "air space" designed into the tank (for expansion) that's pretty much impossible to fill up. Combine that with the manufacturers sales hype - always stating the actual tank volume, not the useable gallonage, for the brochure. Sooo, 'odds are' you have the 17.2.

DUBKEITH 02-24-2005 01:33 PM

Always a ton of help Flamed.

Thanks.

Have graduated cylinder, will travel.

KING 02-24-2005 03:07 PM

The most I have ever filled my tank capacity of 17.2 gallons was 15.493 and that was running the needle over the "E" for Empty.

Ever read the "Do not top off" notice on the gas pump?

I sure haven't. :D

Paul H. 02-24-2005 03:09 PM

My manual says 17.2 gallons with 225/75r-15 tires. 18.8 gallons with 31x10.50-15 tires. Thats for a 92 4Runner.
