There were a couple people earlier in this thread saying that nitrous is horrible for any engine and just tears up.

Truth is, modern nitrous systems are very safe. Of course theres the always the dangers of screwing something up but if you do things right, and don't get greedy nitrous is very safe as long as you're engine is in good shape. However if you're doing any kind of forced induction, you're engine better be in good shape, it's not just nitrous that'll tear it up.

Some cars/engines obviously are more suited for nitrous than others. Would I spray my 4runner? Hell no, it's pointless...Bottle on the camaro on the other hand, wonderful. LS1's seem to love N20.

Not to mention that it will actually clean your combustion chambers and crap when you spray.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD...It's NITROUS not NOS or NAWZ or whatever. NOS is a brand, there's lots of other people that make Nitrous kits...Sorry, its just a huge pet peeve of mine...I hate when people see the bottle in the camaro and say "Oh snap dawg, that whips got the nawzz."

If you must get technical it is nitrous oxide NO is the molecular formula. Turns out its the same stuff the dentist gives you. Laughing gas.

Oh yep your right. Its one of those odd ball compounds that doesnt not in the name that it has two N at the beginning. Instead of being dinitrogen monoxide or dinotrogen oxide its just nitrous oxide. My mistake. Should have remebered my chemistry better.

hopefully nobody give me too hard a time for bumping a 3 month old thread. i was just looking for some info and came across this thread.

first things first, with that many miles you must rebuild the motor if your going to do anything to it. second i always recommend a turbo compared to a supercharger. especially because you said you want more speed. if you stay off the gas you will get decent gas mileage compared to a supercharger, if you stay off the gas that is.
but first things first. if you want to take advantage of the supercharger or as i recommended the turbo, you must make some necessary changes. first start with getting a stronger head gasket. and if your rebuilding the motor already i would lower the compression a little so you can actually run a little boost. i would definitely do a valve job as it will be working overtime with forced induction. Once you have everything ready to support this new power. i would definitely get a high flow cat and new exhaust/intake/ignition.
that is what everyone else pretty much said except im stressing the built motor. no point in getting a supercharger or turbo kit and only be able to run 3 or 4 lbs boost.
i may not know alot about toyota trucks but i have built three Evo 8's, a few WRX's and a RB powered S13. so i know alot about forced induction.
if your going to skimp you MUST get a new, stronger headgasket and some head studs. but cam and lower compression pistons will make your rig alot more fun.
and it will sound pretty sweet too.

and its killing me...NOS is a brand of nitrous. dang fast and furious ruined everybodies minds. lol

[QUOTE=Matt16;50950521]Say its got 90 rwhp now
  • headers and full exhaust might add 10rwhp
  • intake alone <3hp (just enough to be noticeable)
  • OS valves and cam 15rwhp
  • aftermarket ignition 5 wrhp before it burns up

Maybe that nets you about 120 rwhp. Which is more than it sounds. RWHP doesn't tell you much about how it will feel to drive, torque would, but I can't say I've enough info to make those inferences.

QUOTE]

Pretty much my setup. and after all that I've done you know what hasn't change? It's still a 4cyl. I'm happy with it and will run this new motor till it craps out in 220,000 or more miles with luck (fingers crossed) then I'll consider 2.7L Tacoma or what ever is hot @ the time. I like my little motor and with glasspack it like viagra :0

well the 22re comes stock with 115, so wasting money in it is dumb, you will pay more for a supercharger or whatever when you can get a 3.4 swap and how about the same amount of power...i reccomend not trying to polish a turd...

if you really want power, get another car, or swap the engine

i drove my dads 1.8 liter turboed jetta, and DAMN it kicks. Kinda suprising considering that my engine is bigger and my car weighs less, but i don't think my truck was ever made for speed, no matter how many mods you threw at it.

Your best bet would be to swap engines. Ive seen some guys swap in that Lexus V8 thing, and that if you could do it would be pretty cool. Other guys do the 7mgte engine swap.

Turbos are cool, but i wouldn't recommend adding one to the 22re, because engines that aren't designed with turbos in mind don't last well running with a turbo or supercharger, cant handle the extra PSI.

GL on whatever you decide to do.

I hate turbos on off road rigs. Supercharger is the only way to go.
Theres nothing worse than an unpredictable burst of power when your navigating something technical like rocks. Supercharger is the only way to go off road because of the predictability.
