I've owned countless yota trucks from 84 to 2000. Most had the 22r or re's. I'm on my first 3vze powered vehicle (91runner) and I hate the motor. Thinking about swapping it out for an re. It is a pain to work on as previously mentioned. I even made it a 5 speed and the thing still feels gutless compared to my rte truck on 38's w/ 4.10s. IMO the 22rte is by far the way to go with a simple turbo swap. Mine had well over 260,000 miles before I had to rebuild it because of 2 spun bearings. So reliability, cheap-ness and power(well sort of) all in one package. Too bad they were only offered from 85(2wd) to early 88.

I have a truck that is 22R/5speed and a 4runner that is 3VZ-E/auto. And although the 22R has proven to me time and time again that its bulletproof, so has the 3VZ-E. Neither of my trucks get the best mileage, but my 4runner is definitely faster and more powerful even with the auto trans. And although you do need to change the timing belt on the 3VZ-E every hundred-thousand, if it does break, it won't hurt anything unlike the timing chain in the 22R

I don't cross breed.....
The ol 3vze puts out just enough power to tide me over till I can afford to shoehorn in a 1uz! It can keep ahead of traffic without a problem.
Can your 22r do this?

Agreed. But the biggest design flaw with the 3vze is the exhaust manifold design. It tends to collect major amounts of heat due to the constrictive flow of the manifolds. I've been preaching about headers on this site ever since I joined. IMO, a full exhaust modification (headers, no cat, 2.25" catback setup) does WONDERS for the 3.0

Yeah, thats the crappy part.
I get around 16-17mpg with my normal driving habits ( I stay ahead of the pack most of the time, 3-4grand each gear) but up to 21mpg when im cruising on the hwy (100-110km/h, anyfaster and my mpg drops fast).
Im just happy its one of the quicker yotas around... I love spanking lifted trucks without gears
I don't notice my exhaust anymore, ever since I put in two alpine 10's I don't hear it much
