22r/22RE hybrid engine questions - PICS ADDED!! Need Help
I currently have an 87 runner with a 22RE that needs a head gasket and the bearings rap at startup. I have access to an engine that I believe is a 22RE block with a 22R head. This hybrid engine is currently not in a vehicle so it would be easy to work on it to get it rebuilt and install it in my runner. My questions are - Will this engine bolt up to the existing fuel injection system that is currently in my runner and also will the wiring connections need to be modified at all? Are there any advantages to an engine like this or anything else I will need to be cautious of or modify to make it work. My runner has been sitting for over a year and I want to get it back on the road/trail as soon as possible. Thanks for any help.

you're gunna have to switch over all the efi stuff
more than you ever wanted to know about the difference between the blocks and heads on the 22r, 22re, and 20r's

since you say it's a 22re block, the block should bolt to the trans and frame just fine and should not have any wiring issues as long as all the existing parts on the truck are used / transferred to the hybrid block / head.
the 22r head does not have a intake manifold bolt boss or two that the 22re head has, so the stock efi manifold won't be properly secured to the head.
http://www.toysport.com/Technical%20...tech_notes.htm has a description about other things that are different between 20r/22r/22re's.

I have a few pictures of the engine. I am deferring to the experts to let me know exactly what I am dealing with. I just need to know if it will bolt up to my 87 runner and the existing EFI system without modifications? Also I would like to possibly rebuild the engine so I would need to know exactly what block and head I am dealing with. Thanks again for any help. Hopefully the pics are clear.

Yes it will. I cant tell you for sure what year exactly, or if the harness will be the same, but it will fit.
That looks like air injector near the exhaust side, I know I had it in my '88, but it stopped at '89.
So it should bolt up and it looks like your harness should work too

It looks like a 83-84 Celica 22re engine. They used the older tall deck blocks and large combustion chamber heads. Very reliable engines! Look at the block on the driver’s side just behind the motor mounts. If it’s an 85 or newer short deck block it will have the embossing for the turbo oil line. If it doesn’t, then it’s the older tall deck block. Compare this to your old 87 22re which will have this. Either way, this engine will work just fine. However you will need to use all of your 87 EFI parts.

In order to rebuild it, will I need to know exactly what it is or can I order the master engine rebuild kit from engnbldr and be good to go? Basically will the kit be different for a celica 22RE than a runner 22RE?

You will need to know if it is a tall deck (81-84 22r/re) block or a short deck (85-95 22r/re) block. You know that the head is an 81-84 so you will need to order parts for it. I would assume and from the pictures it looks like a tall deck block. Putting a 81-84 22r/re head on a short deck block requires a lot of modifications to get the timing chain to work. Same mods that people have to do to install a 20r head on a short deck block.
Check for the protruding embossing on the drivers side of the block. If you need a reference, compare it to your 87 motor which will have it. It kinda looks like a Mickey Mouse head.
