1989 4runner v6 no start

1989 4runner v6 SR5 3vze 5spd manual

Just picked this truck up for a steal (mostly rust/rot free S. Cali truck in Connecticut!), and one of the issues is that it will not start. With the PO statement, i believe it should be an easy fix. He stated that if he let the truck sit for an extended period of time, say a month or 2, it would be difficult to start, but after that he could drive it everyday no problem. Now it has sat for a bit over 6 months and now will not fire up at all. The starter turns the motor over on the key. Ive jumped the pins at the diag port and heard the fuel pump run, so im assuming its delivering fuel to the rail. Actually im sure its delivering fuel since i pulled the intake tube to more easily access the distributor cap, and a decent amount of fuel came drooling out of the TB. If its like this in the intake, then i wonder how much is in the cylinders! maybe its flooded! Cap/rotor/wires/plugs all look very new. i pulled the plugs and they were wet with fuel and fouled. i cleaned em up and tossed em back in. I can get it to pop/fire a couple times on cranking and then its back to just turning over. then more pops and the rpm needle jumps, then back to just cranking. Maybe a weak spark? ive changed the coil itself.

thoughts:
-somehow diag the AFM. anyone have insight on how to do this?
-test the ignitor
-cold start injector/swith?

any other ideas or ways to check above? thanks all.

I had a friend with the same problem, after some trouble shooting found out her distributer just went out, froze up. Bought a used one from a junk yard for 50 bucks, re timed it and it fired right up

Hm ok. There's a truck being parted out nearby so I may just grab all the expensive parts and swap em in. Afm, dizzy, etc.

You'd rather throw parts at it, than diagnose? Take it a local shop they need your money more than you do apparently

Sure having a parts truck is handy, but if you don't know whats wrong with the first one you might end up with a yard full of parts trucks.

It sat for a long time, the ignition system parts look new, the tach doesn't move.. These are all clues. My guess is the distributor pickup coil(NE sensor)

No your right I should be diag parts first. The tach does move. But only when it fires for a split second. I'm having a friend of mine come over to look with me tomorrow. Will post with updates after. I am going to check parts with my meter tomorrow. It died on me today.

There is Troubleshooting flow chart at the begining, and the coil inspection is on IG-23(last page pdf#6)

she runs! with the knowledge from the previous owner, who would have thought that it was severely mis-timed? the cams lined up but the crank was probably a good 5-6 teeth off. adjusted it and she fired right up and purred. cant complain, didnt spend more than 85 bucks on a new battery!

I just did my timing belt and it was a PAIN to keep the crank aligned with the cams while the belt tensioned... It took me 3 or 4 tries of being 1 tooth off in either direction so If a mechanical "noob" was doing the timing belt, it's pretty easy to make that mistake!

Congrats on it running! Now it's time for pics!
