New guy with exhaust question

Well, not new. I have been lurking around for a while. So a little about me. I've always loved toyota's and bought my first one in 02. A brand spankin tacoma TRD x 4by. loved it, but sold it just before deploying over sea's. So now I have an 84 with a 22r.

Now the question. Recently I had a water pump go out, which caused it to over heat, and blow a head gasket. Since replacing the head gasket, I've had an exhaust leak that I can't find. I've had the exhaust manifold re-surfaced, the down pipe (collector pipe) welded since it had a crack in it, and replaced the cat converter with a straight pipe. there are no leaks that I can find from the manifold back. the truck sounds like a volkswagen diesel and seems to be coming from the passenger side. My mechanic friend and I both thought it might be the EGR tubing that runs behind the motor, but is sure seems loud for that small of a pipe. is there a way I can temporarily plug this pipe (JB weld?) to check if this is the problem? I would be happy removing the EGR setup all together as it is not required in my state. I'm on a budget here so the cheaper the better,

Thanks in advance,

Welcome welcome...
It might be that the down pipe to cat connection weld is cracked slightly or if it is a bolt connection now you might be mising a gasket.
On my 87 22R I had a similar problem, the motor "flex" under acceleration kept cracking the welds on my head pipe [the one between the down pipe and cat] I replaced it with a piece of "flex" pipe [commonly used on older camaros and the like] and the problem was solved. FWIW I noticed the same thing the sound seemed to be coming from the pax side even though all the exhaust stuff is od the driver's side.
I'm sure others will chime in with their ideas also.
edit: I changed the title of your thread to help the searchers...
edit2: I just re-read your thread you might also have a problem with the "seating" of the exhaust manifold gasket...

ok guys, I will re-check the welds on the down pipe, but they are less then a day old and seem to be well done. the reason I think it might be egr related is that I stupidly bent the pipes to get the manifold off. the leak seems so loud, it's almost like running a straight pipe. I couldn't imagine any leak from the manifold back being great enough to sound like it is. I will try to contribute to the forum more often as I try to do on motorcycle forums, but I am a newb to toyota mechanics so it might take me a while

Don't worry 'bout "contributing" so much right away just sit back and enjoy... so to speak... the contributions will come... besides lots of guys here have bikes once word gets out that you're a go to guy for bikes you'll get lots of "action"...

so it turns out that the problem was the emissions canister that sits below and in front of the carb. when I removed the head to replace the gasket we some how disconnected the hose that connects the canister to the emissions hose. damn thing sounds just like an exhaust leak when ever under a load. hard to see the problem because of the location. All good now, head work seems to have gone well and truck is running like, well, a toyota

Just for the record, JB Weld will not work on exhaust...it can't stand the heat...at least up front before the cat! I speak from experience...

well crap. see there are apparently two types of heads for the 22r, or at least I'm told. I have the version that has three bolt holes on the bottom center for the exhaust manifold. since the toyota heads are a cross flow design, and my manifold is for the version that only needs the one center bolt, I JB welded the other two so they wouldn't simply blow exhaust. I'm really hoping this holds, but if not, guess I'll find a different solution.
