Look what I found.

I bought my '85 Runner for $900 and it runs and drives just fine except the AC doesn't work. Heck! even the aftermarket stereo still works!
They must've been smoking something when they asked you $1200 for that truck.

Well, its on thier private property, and they said that I wasnt the first one to ask them about it. I wouldnt pay that for it, its an outrageous price, All i really want is the transfercase and axle.
I think i may offer 200-400 for it, I bet they dont even have the title!!!

If taken care of, a Toyota R engine can last a million miles.
If poorly taken care of, it could seize up tomorrow.
I'd say that that engine fits in the latter category.
And under the surface rust I bet there is... more rust :-P ha ha!
Be sure to take a hammer with you the next time that you go to look at it and bang on frame in the typical rust through spots to be sure. It could be rusting from the inside out. That sheet metal rust is just scary.
Uh huh, I've heard this one before. I bet they later tell you that they got an $800 offer on it, but want to give you a chance to counter offer and buy it since they like you.
The owner sounds sheisty (drove it recently???) or insane. I'd make an offer for what the axle/Xfer case is worth and walk away if they wanted anything more.
I wouldn't bet on getting much back on selling parts for it. It just looks too rusty/moldy mostly.
If you are dreaming of buying it and fixing it, I would assume:
- blow headgasket
- pistons rusted to block from coolant leaked into cylinders
- radiator & hard coolant/heaters hoses all rusted out.
- brake system needs 100% replacement (master cylinder to calipers/drums)
- electrical nightmare (rats love to chew wiring)
- and 5 dozen other things you wouldn't even think of.
"Long story short", it's going to cost a lot of $$$ to get it comfortable/reliable. and more to make it trail worthy.
If the frame really is solid.......... F-Toy!
BTW, since you are in TX, if you do buy it and part it out, I'm in Austin and I'm looking for a good hood cheap/local.

With that much body rust I would bet the frame has some serious rust and weak spots. The front axle is probably okay but plan on a TOTAL re-build and breaking/stripping alot of the hardware on it. I bet those U-blots are not just going to come off, so plan on a lot of cutting and crap. The rear axle is the narrow version, so it's really only worth the third member. The transfer case is going to be a forward shift, so to use it as a crawl box it will have to be converted over to a top shift. I would even bet the rear springs are to long gone to use as a rear springs up front leaf pack for the SAS.
At most it's worth $200, but plan on fighting with every nut and bolt on the thing in the process of stripping it down. I would just laugh at the guy and tell him to keep it. Oh, and if you do get it don't forget your tetnis shot

Unfortunately this kind of stuff isn't all that unusual. They don't care if it completely rots away there, and a sucker will come along someday, maybe.........I've seen more than a couple old FJ40's rotting away in people's yards around here. I got chased (not quite literally..) off somebody's driveway when I approached the house to ask about one, with lady telling me not-very-nicely "NOTHING IS FOR SALE HERE!!". There's another right in town, in great shape, obviously being used as a storage shed. About 2 years after I moved here, I noticed a "Not For Sale" sign had appeared in the window.
These people could be crazy, stubborn, maybe there's some sentimental value, I don't know, but they're happy to let them rot.

1200 hahaha if you bought and parted it out you might get 500$ that includes selling the FA.
tell them you want to take for a test drive if they want 1200$
I would like to see what they would do for a seat.
offer 300$ give them your number and tell them to call you when they want to sell it for 300$ and just move on if they think it is worth money they will not sell it.

Not even close to worth $1200. Keep looking, you'll find something way better than that pile. A couple hundred bucks would be the most I would pay if I needed some of the useable parts and couldn't get them from a junk yard.
