The best way to clean the intake and throttle body is to remove it and take it all a part so you can get into it easier. It took about 5 cans of carb cleaner when i did mine.

Make sure you use throttle body cleaner specifically...So it won't affect the TPS.

I'd use the throttle body cleaner. Let it soak for a couple minitues then it should wipe off easy with a rag and cotton balls.

Toyota's FSM recommends using carb cleaner (probably just as good as TB cleaner) and removing the TPS before cleaning the throttle body. Just put on a couple of precise matchmarks and you'll be good to go.

Use a stiff plastic brush and just go to town with it. You won't damage the cast aluminum if you use plastic.

I put mine in a parts washer and scrubed it for about 2hrs. This only got a little bit out. Came home and tried carb cleaner and an old tooth brush. All that did was move the gunk around inside the intake parts. Then I took all the parts to the car wash and hit it with high pressure soap. This did the trick and blasted all the crap out for a buck fifty. It was clean as new. Just wish I had read about removing the tps first.
