brake and charge light both on
Hi guys,
New here and working on my daughters 86 22r pickup. I also am having trouble with both the brake and charge light being on all the time. They weren't on before and I was trying to test her electric choke by putting a jumper wire to her choke coil terminal. Next thing I know I have the brake and charge lights on. The alternator is fairly new and putting out 14.5 VDC. The brake cylinder is full and the parking brake switch is fine. I noticed in the fuse box under the hood that there is a 7.5A fuse marked charge which was burned out. I replaced this fuse and it seems to make no difference. The alternator still charges at 14.5V with the fuse in or out. Someone mentioned a relay that kicks the dash lights off after the car starts and sees alternator voltage. Where is this relay? Thanks for the wealth of knowledge I've seen so far on these forums.

Voltage regulator is on drivers side in engine compartment above coil...be sure you get the right one...I think I heard there are 2 different plug-ins...84-85 are different from 86 on up...I got one cheap at Auto Zone...Been on a year and no problems yet...
My 84 did the same thing...I got new alternator and voltage regulater and the lights went out...So I went ahead and got a new battery and new cables and post claps...I used ones with wing nut on top for add on's later...Good luck...

I checked the wiring diagram in my factory repair manual. Mine is for '87, but they should be the same. A wire comes out of the alternator, which has an internal regulator, goes through the charge fuse, and then splits. One wire goes to the charge light and the other goes to the choke heater.
I do not see any relay on the wiring diagram. Try disconnecting the choke heater and see if the light goes off. I am thinking that you possibly burned out something in the alternator. You can take it apart and test most of the pieces so you do not have to buy the entire alternator.

If that model came with a charge lamp relay it is behind the kick panel on the drivers side and they are in the 70 to 80 dollar range. The factory service manual shows how to test. Hopefully you have fixed the problem by now.

I just replaced the brushes (bought them from toyota) then went to have the alternator tested and it came up dead!! Anyone have any other ideas or if you think I may have done something wrong? At this point any thing would help save the money.

dont know if this will help but my 85 efi had a similar problem.backing out one morning all of the sudden all of my light s came on in the dash charge, brake, engine etc.
since the charge light was on i figured it was the alternator.....nope changed it out and nothing.turned out my engine fuse had blown, the truck still ran,but would not charge the battery, dunno what made it blow but i popped in an new fuse and it has been fine since.
