94 4runner runnen 33's too slow!!!

can anybody give me some ideas on how to make my 4runner go up hills better, im runnen 33's on a 4 inch life on a 94 4runner 3.slow!!!, any help please i have hurd changing my gear ratio will help and i have hurd that it will kill my gas mileage, but so far it takes me almost a half tank of gas to get to the pass witch is 50 miles away at the most!!!, how can i make this better, i need better milage and more power to the wheels so i can get up hills with out semi's passing me!!!!!!!!!

Jam the gas pedal and do this whole forward-back motion with your body really fast, usually works.

But beside that, there is really no way to fix your problem unless you wanna dump a lot of money into the truck. Re-gearing is one of cheaper methods assuming DYI install.

You "hurd" right and you "hurd" wrong. Regearing will help your acceleration and speed and it will "help" (not hurt) your fuel mileage. Why? With too low an effective gear ratio, as you have now with the larger tires, the engine must work harder and slower to move the vehicle. You have to press harder on the gas and make the engine run below it's optimal RPM. The smaller engines like to run fast, cruising on the highway at 2800-3000 RPM is usually the "sweet spot", mileage wise. Actually, with my 22RE, I also ran 5.29s/33s for a while and got better fuel mileage w/ 5.29s than I do now with 4.88s. So apparently the 22RE does better at say 3200 RPM than at 2800, mileage wise.

What gears to run? Generally 4.88s for 33s with a manual transmission or 5.29s for an automatic to restore the effective gearing back to stock. And I "hurd" that "hurd" is actually spelled "heard".

I believe that 5.29's are in my future too. Hoping to do the e-locker
at the same time.

so changing my ratio wont hurt my gas milage???, like what else can i do money is a object but i just want to know what im looking at with options here because when i bought my 4runner it had a rebult 3.slow in it with 10 grand on the motor so im not planing on it braking down anytime soon so there are deffenly motor options? i kinda just want to know what the cheapest method is and whats the more costly and the middle

Changing the gear ratio to either 4.88 or 5.29 will *help* your gas mileage and power (acceleration, hill climbing, etc.) with 33" tall tires. Your engine will not have to work so hard and it will be operating at it's ideal RPM range at speed. You can often find junkyard 3rd members w/ 4.88 gears (look for automatics - 4Runners and pickups - w/ the factory 31" tire option), lowest cost if you can get a good price on the used 3rds. Or get new gears and have them installed, probably $400-600/axle.

Regearing is your best option, and IMO the only thing worth changing to try to get more power out of the 3.slow. I changed to 4.88's and was running 31" tires. That was just right for the tire size. I put on 32" tires in May and really wish I was running 5.29. Of course, I do have an auto tranny -- as mentioned 4.88 would be fine if I were driving stick.
