I have an 82 Toy P/U with a manual 4 speed in it, and I have aquired a 5 speed out of a 91 4runner 4 cyl. that I want to put in it. Has any one done a swap of this type and how did you do it? The 5 speed will not mount to the factory 4 speed crossmember.

you're probably gonna have to get a kit for that swap. Try searching, you might get more answers. I don't know much about pre 85 trucks.

i put a 5peed in my 80, it came from a 88 four runner. it was about four inches longer. what i did was hooked up the trany. i had a jack under it to support it. I bolted the cross member on to the tcase. lined every thing up and used 2 of my old u bolts. they were square so i put them facing down, around my frame, the frame is square to so they fit like they belong. The bolts lined right up with the cross member. (one ubolt on one site.) for the other 2 holes in the CrossM. One whole on the frame was right in the center of the other 2 on the CM. I drilled a whole in the center and put a bolt in the origanle whole. Made sure it was sturdy and then welded the u bolts to the frame. ( so i have only 3 whole being used on each side, but it is sturdy.

one more thing. the new trany and tcase fit my origanal cross member. It was a 20r with the L43 4 speed. I had to use a longer drive shaft but the 88 four runners worked great. you might want the 91s if you can get it. I had to order new flanges but they are cheap. for the front drive shaft, save your origanel and cut both ends off and use square tubing to make your own.

i swapped my L43 4 speed for a W56 5 speed with a top shift case from an '87 4runner.
i would never have done it but i had access to a shop, a lift, a tranny jack, a welder and tools.
i bolted the tranny to the engine. used the stock crossmember from the '79. cut some 6"x6" squares of 1\2" plate. welded them onto the frame as new crossmember mounts. drilled 1\2" holes through the plate and crossmember where needed. bolted crossmember to new mounting plate with grade 8, 1\2" bolts. i only used 3 bolts and 3 holes on each side, i think its plenty strong. the 1\2" plate also dropped the transmission down a half inch which i needed because it was sitting really high up under the body to the point of rubbing, so the 1\2" drop was perfect. i also had to cut out the floor to fit the shifters through.
then had my rear driveline shortened and balanced and scored a front lengthened driveline from a friend for super cheap.

Yup, I'm picking up an W56 soon for my '83. Info & photos would be great. I think I'm going to use budbuilts crossmember rather than doing my own, since I don't weld and his x-member is supposed to work perfectly for this.

The height thing scares me a bit........you needed to drop it a bit so it wouldn't rub, huh?

I need info on this as well. Mines a 83 2wd base model with the 4 spd. I don't know which trans it is, but I wanted to do a 5 spd swap, any of them basically swap right in from the other years? I can get machine work done if needed, but I'd rather not push my bosses too much doing my own personal stuff at work.

You know I'm not sure that a 91 will bolt up to the engine..better check that out. Most of the 84-88 tranny's will, but I don't know about a 91. It's definitely just a matter of crossmember relocation and driveshaft mods with the W series engines, but I'm not sure what the 90's toyotas have...
