Toyota Newb need some help

Hey guys I have always been a jeep guy but i just got a 1982 toyota. The truck is in pretty good shape for the age however I have a few issues. Any help on these issues would be great.

If you go pedal to the metal the truck completely bogs down after about 2600 rpm. -------FIXED

Brake Light always on. ------ FIXED

Speedometer not working at all.FIXED ----FIXED

Heater and AC unit blowing but both at room temp.

As I said I am new to this so any help or suggestions where to put my money, what to upgrade, what to protect, to keep this guy running for a long time would be great.

Thanks,

Jeremy

welcome to yt.
-the acceleration problem could be lots of things...search.
- parking light on is probably a bad switch. towards back of p-brak lever is a little switch with a button that tells when brake is engaged.
-speedo not working is probably due to a broken speedo cable.
-heater/ac not changing temp is possibly a linkage issue. all the heater stuff is mechanically controlled by the selectors.

Welcome... pedal to the metal??.. the truck has 100 horses, give or take on a stock
22R..Probably issues with the Carb, I'm assuming it's a 5 speed. Speedo? check your speedo cable going to the dash cluster. .P-Brake? Check the Parking brake switch located under the dash, it's not de-activating when you take the P-Brake off..You can always take the wiring harness off and the light won't come on...Heater not working? Do an engine flush, make sure the heat is "on" so it will circulate through the heater core.... A/C? is the belt running, compressor activating, leaks?? It's a 30 year old truck that's probably been neglected, they'll be issues.. good luck..

Thanks guys I really appreciate it. I just got a new stereo and cb wired in today. Also my key ignition lock cylinder failed and I just got that fixed. When I have some free time I will get to the speedo, e-brake, and the carb or acceleration issues.

Yeah there are a handful of issues but the body is good and the engine sounds great and idles great so I think as long as I get the rest fixed up it should be good to go for awhile.
But I do appreciate the tips!

Parking Brake light always on.
-Could be the floater inside the brake master cilinder, you can disconnect the elctric plug and see if the light turns off.

Good luck...!

Bogging down could be; mixture too rich, timing off, bad or fouled plugs, filters dirty, vaccum leaks... a/c clutch engaging? has the heater core been bypassed? Check to see if the cable is pushed all the way into the back of the speedo head. Sometimes folks think they are in all the way but not. They can vibrate out . You have to reach around under the dash and push till it stops, then gently pull to see if it stays. They slide on not screw on and off. BTW welcome!

Fixed the prake.

Shlobeck. What should I be looking for in the cable to know its shot? Also if cable is good should I move onto the speedo gear on the tcase?

flooring it is not really what I was talking about when you get to almost 3000k rpm it just completely craps out. 5th gear is gone basically in combination 33tires and this problem, 4th gear is worthless unless on flat or down hill, and 3rd gear makes it real hard to merge onto a 70+mph highway.

thanks for the help on the ebrake!

Paul I got the cable all plugged in and no go, i cleaned it up, disconnected from the tcas and spun it add some lube by hand. it spun fine made no noise. So my problem is obviously within the tcase and the speedo gear. Is this a quick fix or does the tcase housing have to be removed to replace the gear?

about th ebogging down, i would do a tune up. plugs, wires, dizzy cap rotar button. even if it doesnt fix it, its not gonna do nothin but help it. ive had good luck with seafoam. get a can and pour it in the tank. or turn the truck on, pull a vaccum hose, i like the one off the brake booster, and stick the hose down the can and let it run the can out. the truck will smoke, spit sputter and sound horrible. keep it revved up and dont turn the truck off til theres no more smoke outta the exhaust. then drive it. itll still smoke a little, but itll feel brand new

good luck and welcome to toyotas!!!!!

I'd also change the fuel filter & drain/clean the fuel tank. Lots of garbage floating around in there with the age of the truck.

Yoder- Ran an entire can of sea foam through it off the brake booster vac. You are right it does feel great. However it did not fix my accel problem. Aqua I drained the fuel tank, put a new fuel filter on.

I reved the truck up to 3300 rpms in neutral and the carb never cut out(when accelerating it bogs at about 2600+ rpms). So I don't think the carb is my problem. I will start researching other areas(ignitions, plugs, etc etc). Any other thoughts are much appreciated.

Thanks again for all the help.
Jeremy

Does it cut out at that engine speed at all road speeds and gears? IE does it only cut out at 2600+ in only 3rd and 4th gear or in all gears?

Wentz I have not taken first or 2nd past 26+ .. I can try that tomorrow however it is probably consistent with the other gears. In 3rd I can get almost to 3k.. in 4th its about 2.8 and 5th its 2.6 or lower when it craps out. So i would assume 2nd and 1st go above 3.

Not to kick a dead horse here but again literally acceleration stops. When I go over the threshold the car literally reacts as if I was accelerating and I just pushed in the clutch the drive shaft vibrates and shakes and when I start to let off on the pedal and the accel catches again its a violent jolt like a bad shift between gears.

It is not random nor inconsistent, it happens at the same place each gear.
