Mystery slop in the rear drive line??? SOLVED

Ok
Ive been chasing down this rear diff mystery trying to find out my gear ratio because someone told me the inch of slop in my driveline must be a bad 3rd member... It just dawned on me that if I can rotate the drive line back and forth that much something must be sloppy in the transfer case or transmission also. How do I know for sure which end really has the problem without tearing it down first??? Comments???
thanks
mark

Hmm, where is Nancy Drew when you need her to solve all these mysteries?

Sounds like you might have some bad U-joints. Grab the end of the joints and try and move it up and down and left to right and there shouldn't be any play or noises, clicking and what not. Also try and rotate the joint. There should not be any play.

These are mysteries that almost everyone goes through owning a truck this old. If you search on Yotatech and other sites, you can find enough information to write a book about Toyotas and make a good living off of it. That is what makes it so fun. You have a problem, you search for the problem, you find the problem, you fix the problem, you learn about the problem, you share what you learned about the problem and then you are not the problem.

Here is a excellent search engine where you can type in whatever your problem is even if you don't know the technical term. Whatever the problem, it has been done.

SEARCH HERE!

4 bolts on either end of the driveshaft
1) to elminate the third member undo the driveshaft from the transfer case and check that. if that doesn't not have any slop
than go to step 2-
2) undo the driveshaft at the third member (4 bolts too) and repeat test for the TC.

more than likely it is a problem with your third

When you drained the oil out of the 3rd did you see any metal?

With my detroit locker in the rear I get a 1/4 turn out of my driveshaft... Took it to a coupple homies and said it was normal.. Kinda wierd thoe parking it putting it in gear then rolling back a coupple inches before it settles. Also got to be careful off the line so the play wont snap any thing when it engages. Same problim?

hence why i put it in my sig a couple of years ago

curious as to what you find out. I know you don't wanna tear down your truck too much but it is a great experience. A rear end tear down is pretty easy. I have done mine 4x's in the last year...I was pretty sure my thunk was coming from my transmission or one of the transfer cases (turned out to be the crawl box) but figured it was faster to pull the rear third out and elminate that

The loose driveline slop was ring and pinion out of tolerence. 20 thousands.. Rebuild third member with old ring and pinion which were in great shape but put in a bearing kit and slop is gone. Mystery clunk is still there and is Axel Wrap...due to lift blocks.... New 5 speed is GREAT

Had the same problem on my 98 Taco. I know its not even close to the same truck but I had a clunk when shifting just like you. Also mine vibrated from like 40 to 55. Rear U-joint was completely shot. Put brake on and leave transmission in N, and get underneath and rotate driveline, I'll bet you get some play.
