crossing water
so i was reading another thread about 3rdgen 4runner goin through some deep water...and i started wondering...whats the deepest you guys would take your 1st gen trucks...STOCK 1st gen trucks...no snorkel...or anything like that...just your stuck 1st gens like mine..i ran off into a DEEEEEEP! mudhole that some chevies made (49"iroks made some DEEP ruts) and i didnt know because they arent supposed to go where me and my buds mud at...but they did...and i didnt know..and i was tryin to be all cool...then i ran into that doin about 6 or 7 mph...only the front half of the truck go in the water...but it got in up to the hood...i backed out a little ways..(thank you super swampers) but still didnt get out..water was coming in through the doors...but not bad...took about 30mins before i was out of it and on my way home(truck started RIGHT UP!)...luckily i didnt hydrolock it..i'll never do that again...so anyways..yea...deepest water you would cross (just to be crossing it) with your stock 1st gen pickup...or any 1st gen..just tell me your mods...

Pop the hood, have a look where the intake is. Any deeper than that and you get the idea. Remember, water splashes, and the fan sprays water everywhere. Another consideration would be your electricals- distributor and ECU (passenger side foot well)

wouldnt the water F#$% up the alternator...of course it didnt with mine...my alternator is mounted LOW too...im going to take the ac compressor out..and the power steering pump..(yea my truck had power steering..but the PO took it out and put in manual) i'll keep the pump though in case i put power steering on the truck..(hopefully i can sometime).i figured water would KILL that alternator in a heartbeat

water only damages integrated circuits and sensitive electronics. Alternators are just a coil of copper wire, a few magnets, and a few diodes.
Submerging an alternator in water (or anything that conducts electricity) most likely will temporarily stop it from working and won't cause any real damage. Should work properly again once taken out of water. The only thing I'd worry about is rust, but that goes for the entire car, not just the alternator.

My worst stuck ever happened like 2 years ago and i had water touching my steering wheel and it took 3 days to pull it out. Was on 35's but it was on old stock 22r with the air assembly. The fan as splashing water up so i had to keep on the gas or it would stall out. After i got it out, not 1 thing was wrong with it beside changing all my fluids and repacking my front diff.

I have 35's and about a 4" lift, id take it up to the bottom of the headlights.
Deepest its been is just over the tires, made it through no problem.. I had to go through it to pull a friend out who got stuck farther in.

Itès not allways how deep the water is but the splash. I stalled out my truck last week in 2.5 feet of muddy water, hit too fast and splashed up. I let it sit and drove out after it blew the water through. This weekend I went through watery mud up to the headlights but I taped the grill and drivers headlight first and no problem.

the last time i went through that hole before i sunk the truck..it was only about halfway up my tires..then the chevy's with 49's went through it..and me and my friends didnt know about it..so i was first one to go through...because if i get stuck..my truck is light enough to pull out almost by hand..lol..

the deepest water that I have been in was to my rocker panels with my 35s so that was a little over 2 foot, but i wouldn't try too much more than that because of the water hitting the fan

I submarined my 4runner with 35's. im not sure how deep it was but the people who went around the edge and were waiting said my headlights were under and i had some water splashing over the hood. I did suck in water, it wouldnt run with the air filter in cuz it was dripping wet, didnt hydro lock, just smelt extrememly rich. I didn't know what hyrdro locking was yet also when i flopped the first time, my 4runner was in like a foot- a foot and half on its side haha and it ran after, i fell off the side of my truck when i climbed out and fell in, i probably looked like the mud monster coming out considering i was totaly submerged. Haha that was some sweet near nakid recovery
