Clutch Pack

Clutch Pack
Hey all. I'm getting ready to marry the engine and tranny soon (81 22R with L52 trans), but need some info from y'all. What clutch pack do you recommend for street/light off road use, for under $100.00. Or does the standard Napa or Ebay units fit the bill. Seen a bunch on internet, but don't have experience in this area to make an educated buy. What do you look for? Brand names, part numbers appreciated. TIA

for under 100 id go with the napa clutch, but I believe they are around 120 now idk if you will find one for under 100.
i personally have the marlin crawler HD clutch, works great on my DD with tiny 235s haha but at least i know i can abuse the clutch with out hurting it.

The autozone clutch i got for my 87' was like 80 bucks with a lifetime warranty. It's a reboxed valeo clutch. Comes with friction disk, pressure plate, throwout and pilot bearings, centering tool, even lube. It's a little softer than stock, but works great! Plenty of grab for a 112hp engine and wont kill your leg in traffic or off road.

OEM clutches are fine.
I haven't heard anything about HD clutches, but there are "sport" clutches around. Don't fall for it! Sporty clutches are low-mass and have no grab unless you hammer the pedal through the firewall.

I wouldn't go too cheap...unless you know it's a great deal on a quality clutch. Lifetime warranty is great, if pulling the tranny is no big deal to you. Personally it's not a job I want to do very often, whether the clutch itself is free or not. I think for most people around here, it really isn't a big deal to pull the tranny every few years, but for a lot of people who only expect to get a more average lifetime out of their truck (ie sell it some day when it's tired and beat, rather than just continually rebuilding it), pulling the tranny and replacing the clutch is hopefully a once-in-a-truck-lifetime job.
Go with something quality. Otherwise I'm not sure you can afford to own a truck.

I've been going with LUK clutches. But honestly the Marlin Crawler clutches are in the same price range, and that's what I'd go for if I did it all over again. The reviews seem to point to it being no stiffer than stock.

Hmm...maybe I'm wrong. I found a LUK clutch kit for $62, but I'm seeing Marlin's heavy duty at $219. Did the price go up in the last year or so??
Anyway, pretty sure LUK supplies Toyota with their OEM clutches, so I think it'd do fine for you. And $62 is sure under $100.

they used to be 199 for awhile but thats as low as ive ever seen them.
like you said before though doing a clutch job is one of those things I dont want to do every year or two. so buy quality and do it right the first time IMO

I've also heard great things about marlin's clutch, if i had had 200 more dollars to spend during my engine rebuild i probably would have gone with that. However, my autozone clutch is doing great a year later, no complaints whatsoever. I believe as well that Valeo is the oem manufacturer for more than one auto manufacturer. Just my 2 cents, i like mine just fine .
