carburetor rebuild 1983 22r

Just rebuilt the carb on my 83, was not as hard as I expected, had a friend that knew what he was doing to help me, we had it apart, cleaned, parts replaced and back together in a little over 3 hours, I'm gonna put it back on tomorrow and see if it fixed my problems, it should have fixed them because there were dirt dobber nests and rusty sludge down in it.

Would not be scared to tare into another one if I had to. Good learning experience.

Good work! That's all I would have needed was someone helping me who knew what they were doing, but I got a little intimidated & just ordered a rebuilt one. Where are you? Rust in the engine compartment always amazes me; we just don't see it here.

Well I live in cleveland, Tn but I picked up the truck out of Atlanta, GA the trucks body and frame are solid but just have surface rust normally all of the 79-83 trucks round here have rusted out floors and rusted through frames. and you cant ever find good beds, mines missing. I'm gonna build a flatbed soon.

well I put the carb back on and still will not drive does start easier though. I put an inline fuel filter between the new fuel pump and the carb and It is barley getting enough fuel to Idle. Thought it might be the lines coming from the tank so I put a gas can below the truck and ran a hose from the fuel pump, still not geting enough fuel it doesn't even fill up the filter half way. I've got O'reilly's ordering me a better brand fuel pump and I think I might have my wife talked into getting me a 17 gallon fuel cell for an early b-day present. I'll do that and start fresh with all new lines and see if I can get it straightend out.

Are you sure you cleaned ALL the passages in the carb? are you sure the pump is bad? what kind of pressure do you have? are you even sure it's fuel related? at idle very little fuel is needed to run an engine.
a filter laying on it's side will always have air in it, if you stand it upright the air will be forced out. If you bypassed the fuel tank and lines with a line and an external tank and it didn't fix your problem why are you replacing them? spend some time properly troubleshooting the problem before you start replacing parts, it will save you a ton of money.

Nice job on the carb did you re-adjust everything to specs?

When I got it, it had a rusted out tank, I got a tank from my buddy out of an '84 that had been sitting in a junkyard for a long time and it had a lot of rust in it, I cleaned it out the best I could but couldn't get all of it out, and the tank was bigger and didin't fit in the stock location, so I figured I would go with a fuel cell later anyway, but your right I do need to do some more in depth trouble shooting before I start replacing everything.

When I have it idling and rev it while watching the filter It doesn't recieve much more fuel, and then it starts running out of gas at the carb??? The sight window goes empty.

Could vacuum lines have anything to do with this problem?

I do need to trace all the vacuum lines, Its got alot of things pluged and unhooked. I just hooked them back up the way they came off

I marked a couple things on the first pic. Think these could have anything to do with the situation?

Cool

had the same prob
change the filter
throw the intakeline in a gas can
if it runs well than blow the fuel lines with the compeser
and hookup the gas tank try it
if no running
than cheack the mix screw
your manual will say the mix

One of the cirlced items is you egr vacuum modulator. Egr issues could cause the truck not to start, or run really bad, but have nothing to do with gas. Do you have an FSM, or vacuum diagram?

If they Haynes is lacking, I've got an '83 FSM I don't mind scanning a page here or there out of. Just let me know.

Oh, and algranger, they do use a little salt here, but not much. Mostly they throw gravel down, and that's only on the roads they do anything to at all. Most of the residential roads they might plow once a winter, sometimes not even that much, though. Keeps people doing reasonable speeds in winter conditions! But that's why you see less rust here, but nary a vehicle around without a cracked windshield from getting gravel kicked up by the truck ahead of you!

Had the same problem
try checking the fuel float level in the carb should be in the middle of the sight glass.
I didn't set mine when I rebuilt the crab but I adjusted the fuel and idle screw.
but in hard braking the truck will sometimes die `

I put the 2nd new fuel pump on there, I ran a hose down to a gas can, it seems to run better so far, I might be getting a 15 gallon fuel cell from a friend, then I can drive it and see if Its all better. hopefully it is. My buddy told me that the problem might be that my jeep is always sitting in the driveway somewhere around it...

Well I had to break down and pay full price for a fuel cell. Its just a 12 gallon, now I'm just trying to figure out where I wanna put it. Thinking about right over the axle with an angle iron frame with a skid plate underneath. I'm gonna try to get it done this week.
