yea its not the solenoid, this is the 3rd started aswell, first thing i replaced. if i cant find a definitive answer to this problem then im just going to mount a switch in my car. its way to inconvenient to just keep poking around and hoping things work. plus this is my daily driver so a quick fix will do for now. once i find that relay and that clutch switch thing and can cancel those out as cooperates, its instant starter switch here i come!!! haha thanks to everyone again for the help and i am still very open to suggestions!

Next to the battery I believe, in the fuse box. Mine had water in it, and the relay for the headlights did too. Looked outside one night and my lights were on. Went and grabbed my gun and when i got back outside they were off. After the 3rd time, it done it while I was still out there. Just because your engine is snorkeled doesnt mean your electrical components are.

The relay on my truck was on the inner fender, between the fuse box and the firewall. It was a small aluminum box, mounted to the inside of the fender up high. I scraped the crud off and it actually said "starter relay". The only place i could get a new one was from the dealership for $150 bucks, so i bought a generic 30 amp relay from Advance, and wired it in myself. Works perfect.

so i've decided on the push button start. i understand from what i have read that i need a momentary switch. i was wondering how i run the wiring for the push button start, what gauge wire to use and also if i should have a fuse in the circuit and if so what amperage. thanks.

I did it a while back just used some wire I had laying around. I would say it was about a 10 gauge wire I believe. Ran from battery to inside cab to switch button. Then the other wire from switch button to the starter, the side of the solenoid that needs the power to start the vehicle. Then when u hit the button it will start the starter right up. I didnt put any fuse. Might be a good idea to put a fuse. but ive had it like that for two years with no problems.
Also dont forget the key has to be on ON or it will just try to start but truck wont go on. When u turn off key truck goes off no problems.
Ill take a pic of button later and try to put it in this post

nice to see this post. I've been having the same problem on my '83. guess i'll try to find and replace the relay to see if the problem stops. mine usually doesn't do it after it gets warm.

so i have an update regarding the "problem". after countless hours of hair pulling i noticed a tiny hole in the insulator of the cable going from the battery to the starter, i tore off the insulator and just my luck the whole core of the cable was corroded in about an 8inch section of the cable, i replaced the cable about 5 days ago and haven't had the problem since. just thought i would let you guys know for any of you with the same problem. good luck.
