'79 Toyota transmission.

I hope this in the right place.

My father has a 1979 Toyota Motor home (now converted with a little cab for sleeping on back and a flatbed).

I took it for a little test drive at my father request because he said first gear was making some noised from time to time. My little test drive of it, from time to time, it sounded like the gears were conflicting and the only way to stop it was to take it out of first or push in the clutch. I'm thinking the transmission is going out (we have replaced the transmission before when it only had 4th gear).

We have invested a bit into it mechanically, all new brakes and everything, radiator, front end, alternator, batteries, converting it from a motor home, etc. Its a great work vehicle as my father is a contractor but he is wondering if its worth it to fix it again.

Probably would be good to change that tranny out for one from a newer truck. The early trannies were the weak point on the trucks. I'm assuming yours is a 2wd. Should be able to find a newer 2wd tranny somewhere for cheap. I've got a 78 2wd pickup with 5 speed up in the bush here. No clue how anything on it is as the frame is rusted in half and can't move at all. Biggest thing you would have to do is get new driveshafts made up and possibly a crossmember. I'd say go for it.

What would be an average cost for that? If it helps, we are located in Salem Oregon.

I honestly have no idea. I have never boughten a tranny before. You could probably check some junkyards around that area and check the classifieds on boards like this.

That would be great. Do you know if it would be plug and play or if other modifications would be needed?

i think all you would have to do is trim a little bit inside the cab for the shifter to go though seeing the 5 speed is a little bit longer.

not hard at all. the tranny is very light and bolts right into place.it will take a little messing around to line things up but its no big deal. let me go take a few pictures for you.

Thanks.

I PMed my Email.

I'll be leaving in a bit for work, got to drive all the school kids home. I'll probably be going over to pick it up, probably in 1.5 weeks or so (on a weekend) if that works for you.
