Dream 4Runner Build Is an Enduring Inspiration

Next, it was time to tackle the wobbly speedometer. But instead of going through the painful process of oiling or replacing the cable, the OP decided to simply use an old smartphone to handle it. With that problem solved, the OP tackled (pun intended) his fishing obsession by installing a rod clip on the inside of the fiberglass top.

Now it was time to work on some creature comforts. 12-volt jacks and a CB Radio went in, followed by a new shift boot cover. Then, the truck got its first “real” mod – some bright LED lighting under the hood!

Next, the OP replaced his worn out calipers and turned his attention to the horn. Apparently, the horn took on a mind of its own and decided to start going off at random times, which was a problem at inspection time. A new pin made it good as new. Shortly thereafter, a full cooling system overhaul was in order to solve some erratic temperature fluctuations. And finally, the OP was able to install some mods, not just fix or replace worn out parts!

“I ordered one of the Old Man EMU steering stabilizer kits and finally got it installed. I am pretty sure the stabilizer on my truck was original and basically doing nothing. Well worth the ~100$ for the kit. The damper comes with the hardware to fit the truck pre-installed. I did this upgrade in about 20 minutes. I got lucky and the old stabilizer came out really easy. As always, hit it with some penetrating lube a day or so before you do this and it will go much smoother. I picked up a pickle fork to make this an easier job. $10 for a tool I WILL use again and last a lifetime.

The truck’s steering seems more solid and controllable. Best of all, I don’t feel like the wheel is going to fly out of my hands on every bump. I will get it off-road this week and really see how much of a difference it makes. But it already feels a lot better.”
