It just goes to show you that in any profession that diagnosis skills are required that not everyone is up to the task and actually know just enough to get themselves into trouble. I personally believe that jobs like that should have a simple test like this to get hired on, I don't think that the guy was trying to rip them off, he just didn't know what he was doing most likely.

Wow, an actual good bit of reporting from Fox News, who'd'a thunk it.

Old thread, I remember when this story aired, but still a good reminder.

They have done the same thing for car repairs and other things also, around here the Fox News is actually pretty good, when I was visiting my mom in So. Cal the news was a joke.

I think it's because the smaller Fox stations still have to pull in some sort of reporting to pad the fluff they rebroadcast.

A man who answered the phone at Geeks on Time said it would be too expensive to come out for repairs and suggested not to pay for the repair.
this is very true... I work for a IT consulting company. there have been several times when I recommend replacement over troubleshooting. if the computer is more than 3 years old and out of warranty, it makes no sense to sink a bunch of cash into it to fix it. if it really was a bad hard drive, then take the money you'd spend on fixing the problem and use it towards a new faster machine.

this is why i try to do all the fixing myself even though I can't do it all but my hd just crashed the other day and waiting on a new one to come so i can start all over again. hopefully though, i will be able to save my documents and music! I enjoy trying to fix them but unless you have parts that will work on older ones, it's not worth it. The one i'm using now is 10 years old I bet and it is maxxed out where i can't do anything else to it but it still runs, just slow. If i could find a newer to replace it though, I would just so I would have a newer htpc!

Good advice Tofer but what do you do about all the data stored on your old HD? unless you can recover it some how you're doomed...
