Garmin iQue users...help please

I get an error message after loading some Topo Maps

"HotSync operation started 08/20/05 03:58:02
- Install failed: C:\Palm\Mark\Install\GMAPSUPP.PDB
The memory in your handheld may be full. To check the available memory, select Menu/Info from the handheld's Application Launcher.

OK Memo Pad
OK Voice
OK WorldMate
-- Backing up db WmCities to file C:\Palm\Mark\Backup\WmCities.PDB
OK System
HotSync operation complete 08/20/05 03:58:56"

Memory is at 14M of 22M so its not full.

I can no longer use the ADDRESSES, CITIES, LODGING etc under the FIND function.

I have done a hard reset and hot sync'd with no luck.

Any bones you can throw my way?

I use the GPS function at least a couple times a week. Damn

you need to buy a memory card with a lot of room. its worth every penny.

it probably didnt go to the full 22 because it couldnt fit the whole file.

try buying a memory card, that should fix it.

I've already got a 256MB card in it.

There's something else wrong besides memory I believe.

Thanks

Have you done a re-boot of the unit? it's a small hole in the bottom you press with the stylis.

How do you load the maps to the card?

I load using a port on my desktop then put the card in the iQue. I sometimes get funny stuff but a re-boot usually works.

Yup, I deleted the PDB file but that didn't work.

I hard reset 4 times in various combinations and that didn't work.

Finally I deleted all my maps from the Desktop and the handheld, then reinstalled everything making sure that the maps went to SD card.

So now I am back to square one. It is working!

I need to learn where on my unit the topo maps are that I installed. Back to Garmin FAQ.

I load maps to my SD card by choosing the maps I want then it gives you a window with the option of saving to the internal drive or the SD card.

Thanks guys...

Mark

Damn! Now I am pissed

Eveything was back to normal so Now I decided to download the topo maps (again).

I set them up on the computer first - no problems.

Then did a hot sync....

It started to download the GMAPSUPP file again and I was worried that it might be going to the internal memory (would not fit) so I cancelled the operation. Now I have lost the FIND ADDRESSES function...AGAIN

I know the topo maps can't be searched by FIND ADDRESSES, so am I just stuck in the topo maps section of my Handheld and somehow I can get back to the normal maps which allow FIND ADDRESSES?

Damn

Ooooooooooookaaaaaayyyyyyy....

Can someone confirm for me this hypothesis....

Using Garmin iQue handhelds you can either have regular maps or topo maps but not both on one SD card?

Therefore, when just touring or doing residential driving use one SD card with normal maps, and when offroading, use an SD card with topo maps?

Have I got this correct?

Cheers
Mark

I believe that is correct.

Go to
http://www.4wdtrips.net/forum/default.aspx?f=13&m=15609

It's a loooooooooong post but I believe it has all the information you need. You may need to register, but it's free and easy, and they have lots of good info.

Thanks for that! Great info albeit loooonnnngggg!

Here's the relevant info to my hypothesis:

"To store both road and topo data you'll need seperate SD cards due to volume AND seperate software means you cannot load them together."

Thanks for the help.

Update from Garmin

"Thank you for contacting GARMIN International. I would be happy to help you
with this!

You most certainly may load more than one mapping program on one SD
card. You would just need to toggle between them depending on which one you
want to see. Please see the instructions below on how to toggle between
them. Thanks for your time!

If you want to load different MapSource programs to the unit and need to
switch between mapping software just go to the map screen and tap on the
drop-down options button (just to the right of Home), next tap on General
and tap on Detailed Maps. Next, tap on Preferences and tap on Disable All.
Now you need to tap once more on Preferences and just tap on the name of the
software you would like to enable. If you try to have them all enabled at
the same time they will not display correctly.

Best Regards,

Not sure I want to try. I am so sick of hard resets and installing and uninstalling. Hmmmmmmm.....

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh that makes sense actually.

i follow why that is the case... in that it is set by default to display ALL maps. if you change it to showing NO maps, then load both types, you can then choose between them.

if its set to ALL and you try to load both types, it won't accept it.

Soooo.... on the information from Garmin I proceeded to set up my handheld with topo and City Select Maps.

But it didn't work. I could not get access to both map types simply by going to the preferences. In fact it seemed like I would lose one map or the other.

So I emailed them again and got another explanation - which I wished they has told me prior. You have to load BOTH MAP SETS TOGETHER otherwise you lose one!

Here's the reply...

"In order to have the options (to use either maps type) you have to load the maps at the same
time. Select TOPO maps and then select the City Select maps and do one load.
Otherwise, when you load TOPO and then load City Select- the TOPO is going
to be deleted and City Select is going to be the only thing on the unit. So,
in MapInstall, select ALL of the maps you want from both programs and load
them in. Thank you for your time and have a good day!"

Well...I'll try this and see what happens.

I was at the Gramin site a few weeks ago and they had a software update. I down loaded it and my iQue seems to work faster and I haven't had to reboot since. It won't solve your mapping problem but it made my unit work better.
