Cleaning my axle tube.

I'm cutting all the extra stuff off my front axle tube today such as the sway bar mounts, steering stabilizer mount, and trac bar mount. I noticed these archs on each end of the tube that seem to be bumps to limit the steering travel. I was just wondering if they are necessary or not.

You need to keep those...they are steering stops. Once you get everything together, you will need to adjust the stops on the knuckles.

Ah alright ordering it now...

Could I warp my axle housing from the heat of grinding too long or is that just when welding?

Yes, you want to keep the steering stops and reinforce them w/ the knuckle ball gusset kit (which we have) and you'll need to hack off the shock mounts as the gusset kit has integrated shock mounts.

That is one freaking rusty axle.

Its really not that bad. Infact when it stops raining on my parade (literally) I'm gonna pickup a new wire wheel for the grinder and make short work of that surface rust. I managed to cut off the shock, sway, and trac mounts that were on my axle.

I still wanna know do I have to worry about heat warp from grinding though?

Use a flapper wheel as the wire wheel will mark it up.

No it wont warp grinding on it unless you didnt stop for two weeks straight.

Just Hammer rite the axle That's my plan for my 82.

From what I've read about welding on the gussets and truss, just stitch weld them on, take your time, don't let the axle heat up and you will be fine.

Also, I vote you get them from Wab Fab. That's where my stuff came from.

It might discolor meanign that it will turn brown from the dirt.
Plus I'm sure getting drag over rocks will chip that Rhino liner away.

Paint is and east touch up.

I Dont think there is a real reason that you cant use the stuff, its just pointless i guess. Tony is right. plus when you are welding do about 1in at a time and switch around, you dont wanna warp the thing.

I'm just gonna get a new one out of the junkyard when I go to get some IFS hubs.

Is rebuilding this axle as easy as it looks from reading over tutorials or is the whole shim order part a little tricky? I was gonna pay to have my buddy do it but then I figured I wouldnt be learning anything.
