US cars use metric or SAE?

Technically, domestic veicles used USS standard (coarse) English opposed to SAE standard (fine) English threads. SAE has since adopted the coarse threads and the old USS standard has all but disappeared. To make it worse, current domestics use SAE standard metric and Japanese use JIC standard metric. For those that have both a Japanese and a domestic, ever notice why you can't use the same wrenches for both vehicles? Or you go to a hardware store for a M8 bolt and it has a 15mm head instead of 14mm like Toyota uses?
