If YOU are doing the work yourself you can do it any way you want.

If a reputable shop is doing it, they will (should) insist on using a kit.

In the front end.....ya, you can get away with old bearings and a crush sleeve mostly because it sees only 1% use and no highway speeds....
The rear is more "critical" cause of the full time use/abuse/heat it sees. The pinion bearings are usually quite worn so a master kit is a wise investment. In addition, a solid colar for $30 is money well spent for durability.
US GEAR would be the strongest and most dependable......this is assuming that the actual install was of pro quality. See my webpage for some insight. If you give it a shot and screw things up then I offer my pro install services to undo your "handywork" ZUK

Then there is the possiblity of damaging bearings with removing them from the carrier or pinion. I've had bearings I thought were good come apart on the press during removal. So, even if you don't plan on replacing them, don't start unless you have replacements and money lined up and available. BTDT.

Nope. No one to blame but the mechanic (me). My point though is to be prepared for any eventuality. Nothing sux worse then getting halfway into a project and not have what you need to finish.
