Diff gears question...
Hey guys... Just won some 5.29's from Mark (formulatoy), but they are for a 4Cyl... Is there any way at least one set would work for my rear diff ('91 V6) since they are the 8" R&P's? Or will I just have to sell these to a person with a need for two sets (or just one)? Thanks!

I'd lean more towards the side of No. I think the only way you could do it is if you were to switch 3rd's, and even still I dont think that would work. Might be wrong, but I think you can go from a 4 to a 6, but not the other way around

Cool, that's what I was thinking. I probably won't be going to 35's for a while... (if ever) so... You may see them in the classifieds here shortly. If I can't use them at all, then I will be selling them.

There are actually two types of R&P, let's call them "LPH" (Long Pinion Head) and "SPH" (Short Pinion Head).
- '79-'85 rigs have SPH gears and a "thick" inner pinion bearing designed for the 4cyl housing. All aftermarket "4cyl" R&P and inner pinion bearings are identical to these factory parts, that way the same part numbers will fit all '79-'95 four-cylinder rigs.
- '86-'95 four-cylinder and V6 rigs ALL come with LPH gears. However, to use LPH gears in a four-cylinder housing you MUST use the "thin" '86-'95 factory Toyota four-cylinder inner pinion bearing. If you use a "thick" aftermarket bearing (or a factory '79-'85 bearing) the pinion will be too deep into the mesh and won't work.
- SPH gears will fit V6 housings if you add a lot of inner pinion bearing shims. Precision Gear avoids having to use so many shims by offering an aftermarket LPH gearset for V6 housings.

Joe, what website did you find that? I was doing a little research on this to help Kevin try and figure out how to make it work, but never came upon that info.

Keggo---the 4 cyl gear will work just fine in your V6 3rd....use about a .243" pinion shim and you are good to go. I believe there to be no loss in strength either. V6 gears are harder to find and more money. What brand or markings do you have on the ring gear?
