New Clutch

Its time to do the clutch in my T100. I don't know if it has ever been done and at 228000 miles its starting to act funny. Has anyone used an aftermarket clutch? What did you think? Should I stay with factory toyota quality stuff?

I just replaced the original clutch in my T100 with 149K miles on it. i had been looking at the Asco clutches on Ebay for about $140 buy it now. I went to a clutch place and they gave me song and dance that they had never heard of Asco and that Luk performance clutches were the best after market available. The guy charged me about $250 for a Luk (pronounced Luke) replacement kit ie clutch, bearings, tool, ect. Wouldn't you nknow that when it came time to install my new clutch guess who it was made by? Aisin. Plain as day written all over the clutch was Aisin. FYI asco is the exact same thing as Aisin. My Luk clutch was nothing more than an overpriced Asco clutch kit. I was hot The guy told me he had never heard of Asco...BS...there's no way this guy had never heard of them. Bottom line, get yourself an Asco clutch replacement kit off of Ebay. Besides, Asco/Aisin make most of the OE parts for toyota anyway. I really couldn't tell that I needed a new clutch, as my old one still held fine. But when I tore in I saw that the clutch plate and packs were badly worn. I hope this helps.

Personally, I would stick with OEM. The chick that I bought my 4Runner from fried the original at 66K miles

I spoke with another lady that had 278K on her 3rd gen with the original clutch!

I'm 99% sure that Asco aka Aisin are OEM. The old clutch I pulled out of my T100 has Aisin stamped on it. Maybe there's some variance to it, like the way NGK or Denso plugs come stock.

Hmmm, you might be right. Just like Exedy is for Honda (I think).

Cool thanks guys. I'm not sure what I'll do. Mine still grab fine on road, but offroad I have smoked the thing bad. I will just wait until I replace the rear main seal.

I've looked at the Centerforce clutches and read several reviews from people who are using them in their Toyota 4x4's. As good as they are, a majority of users felt it offered no more than a Toyota clutch.

Stories like 96 Runner said, of 200K on the stock clutch are fairly common. Haven't heard anyone say they've gotten 200K+ on an aftermarket unit. I'll stay OEM when it's time to replace mine in the '85.
