How does the interior trim for the hatch come off?

I'm scoping out a backup camera install for my '05 Sequoia limited. The plastic trim on the inside of the rear hatch will have to be removed to run wires from the camera to the back-up lights, but there are no visible fasteners on the trim piece.

Looking for how-to advice here.

Thanks,

John.

Not sure about a Sequoia but on both my 4Runners it was attached by plastic plug thingies around the edge. I could remove it by carefully prying it off with a screwdriver.

Hey Eric,

Were those plug thingies visible from the outside, or did you have to pry up the edge of the trim to see them?

Cheers.

No, they were completely hidden. They just push into holes in the tailgate sheet metal so prying up the edge usually popped them out.

Sounds like mine, then. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks again for the info, Eric. I used a pry bar against a piece of cardboard to remove it.

I had a lot of the tailgate apart yesterday:

I discovered that the upper and side hatch trim has to be removed in order for the main hatch trim to come off, and the bolt securing the pull strap assembly's gotta come out too.

This is part of the continuing back-up camera install saga, but I'll start a new thread for that.

It's mounted on a flat piece of metal that slips behind the license plate and is secured with double-sided tape:
