My brother-in-law has a '96 4Runner. He said it wouldn't start and the shop wanted $250 for a starter and about another $250 for the labor. I asked him what was going on with it. He explained the typical problem... I told him to order the contact repair kit, and I'd fix it for him. I found this site right after he agreed to let me save him some $$. Thanks to the sticky by "Bob_98SR5" for making it a bit easier. It was 10 degrees in the garage where I did the work and chunks of snow and ice were part of the fun.

bravo! I spent my xmas in the garage, although it was only 30F but snowing at least! got my brothers truck tuned and finally running good after we finished a HG replacement!

See...they make these things called garage heaters... Just had to be a smart azz! I spent $100 on an LP garage heater and it keeps my 900 square foot garage at a pretty constant 60-70 degrees while I'm working out there. The down side is that 20 pounds of LP goes bye-bye pretty fast.

I don't mind the "smart azz"... I'm a Canuck... we are used to dishing it out, and can take it. If I would have known it was going to be so frigid, I would have had him park it there the night before. He needs his truck for work. So I had to do it when I had the chance.

My bro-in-law says he's going to get me a garage heater. I must have been surviving on the Canadian blood, because he had to go into the house a few times to warm up. The pizza arrived just as I finished!

My neighbour will supply the propane, as he works in propane! Makes my summer life of BBQin' EZ!

Piece o' cake. I was a mechanic in the USAF. We learned a lot of tricks overseas to keep the vehicles running. On some starters, you can just flip the contacts around. We used the machine shop to make quite a few mods to keep things going.

Yup, must be the Canadian blood. I've got no issue working in the garage at that temperature either... albeit, Vancouver is still considered to be a fairly moderate place for Canadian standards, especially during the winter.
