Wiper arms

Well today I took the plunge and bought new Toyota inserts and blades.
I had aftermarket blades before so the Toy inserts would not fit them.

I put them on about an hour ago, and I'm almost wishin' it would rain so I can test them out

I noticed the arms that go down to the gear that turns the wipers back and forth are real faded and scungy looking.
How does one take these off?

I have never pulled the whole arm off before.
I see a plastic cap. I assume you have to pop that off somehow, then there is a setscrew in the arm & gear?

If so, and you pull them off, are the splines marked with a notch so they can be put back in the corect position so they will park right?
I don't want to have to trial & error to get them back to the same position again.

I'm thinking of painting them with the same brand of paint my sliderz are painted, but only a gloss instead of the hammered finish the sliderz are.
TIA,

I haven't taken them off mine yet, but from experience with other vehicles, you will want to get a paint pen to mark where they are now. It should be a bolt holding them down on a grooved stud. If you are lucky, one groove will be larger than the others so it will only fit on one way. But I wouldn't hold my breath for that situation.

you can just pop off that cap, and there should be a nut/bolt there.... loosen that up, pop off the arm, and attach new ones. i didnt really understand what you meant about making sure everything is lined up right, maybe because i have been doing homework all day and am kind of tired.. but if you mean where the wiper falls on the window, you could just take a piece of tape or something to mark where they are when off or down. possibly a marker. or you could just paint them right on the truck good luck, hope i helped you - you've helped me and the rest of us plenty of times.

Wiper arm painting writeup

Corey,

I recently (over the weekend) removed my wiper arms and painted them. I had a pretty grungy rust problem. I sanded mine, sprayed a rust inhibitor, and sprayed on the Plasticoat Bedliner product. They turned out great! My wiper arms were kind of the test bed for my grill, tail guards and tubes - all of which are rusting a bit. I took a bunch of pics through the process, but I didn't think painting my wiper arms was worthy of a write up. Would anybody be interested? I'd be happy to do it. I've been itching to do a page anyway. Let me know, everyone...

I'd like to see a write up if you don't mind. My wiper arms are faded, and i want to spray them before they rust.

Hey thanks guy's for the tips.
Cebby, a write-up would be cool.

This paint you bought, is it the Plasticote brand, and what is it called? Bedliner paint?
That might be more duralbe than the Hammerite paint I was going to shoot mine with.

The Hammerite paint though can even be shot over rust and it will kill it.
Mine are not rusted, just faded and the primer is showing on them.

Mine are smooth, I was just going to sand them with 0000 steel wool, and then wipe them down with Griot's Paint Prep before I shoot them.

I am interested in the paint you used though.
My wiper arms have been this way since I got the rig in '98.
Some new paint would really look nice on them.

Paint

SON OF A .... I couldn't find one of the disks of pics for the project - I hope it turns up. The paint I used is the "plasti-kote" brand "Non-Skid Truck Bed Liner" #P46-265 Black. Here is some of the propaganda - "Permanently Bonds to Surface, Quick Dry Spatter Coating, Easily Recoated, Resists Fading" On the directions, it says to "Sand any rusty areas until smooth" and doesn't say anything further about other prep to rust. I took an extra precaution since I'm in the "Salt Belt" You hold the spray can of this stuff about 24-30 inches from the work and it gives a great textured finish. I've noticed that even 12 hours after application, the finish is extremely hard. I couldn't scratch it. I cured it with a heat gun since I was worried about waking up to rain and no wipers... The arms come off easy, (1) 12mm nut. I soaked mine with WD40 prior to removing - came right off. I used a grease pencil to mark the position on the windshield. I only painted the steel part of the arm. The part that goes onthe stud is cast aluminum and looked good, so I left it be - especially since the steel part pivots on it. BTW, I used an old chisel to scrape the rust off of mine, then I used 400 grit all over to give it some tooth...I'll start working on putting a writeup together.

corey - if you want to get really heavy duty, go to one of those spray-in bed liner places, and have them spray your wipers. lol. im getting one of those spray in liners, and they are really tough.

I took the easy route and installed rubber wiper arm boots from Schuck's.

Update

OK, I have not taken the arms off yet as it has been raining here the past few days.
Gotta have them on for now

I did take a drive today and used the new Toy inserts for the first time.

Hello...

This kind of falls into the same class as a custom muffler.
Some wonder why they did not do it earlier after they hear the great tone, and I am wondering why I did not use the Toyota inserts earlier.

No squeak, and I could not even hear them drag across the window.
Amazing...Now I will have to see how they hold up.

WA. state is famous for rain from late October through spring.
Oh, the inserts also took off all the water in one pass.
The other ones would leave a lot of droplets behind.

Toyota seems to have an "edge" (pun pun fun ) over the other inserts out there.
These really do work, and are probably the best out there.
I have tired a lot of aftermarket ones, including the Bosch, and ones I just took off from that squeaky wiper blade commercial on TV.

These beat them hands down.
