Question Where's the heat sending unit?

The temp guage in my 84 4runner has did weird crap the whole time I've had it (goes half way up right after it's started, reads normal then drops all the way down to cold, etc.}. I'm fixing to do a whole lot of driving in the desert, and I want an accurate reading of my engine's temperature. I think the guage is alright, but I'm not sure where the sending unit is. My truck came with a 22R, but I think it might actually have a 22RE fitted with a carb if that makes a difference in where the sending unit is. If anyone has some pictures they could post of the sending unit, or if something else might be making the guage read screwed up it would be appreciated.

hmmm...its on the top near the efi unit in the block on the 22re--- cant imagine it would be moved on the 22r-- might have to take the carb off, but it should be on the block somewhere in the water jacket.

thats weird, mine does the same thing, also my oil pressure gauge doesn't work, anyway i thought that it may be a sending unit going bad, so i un-hooked all of the connectors on the intake and the gauge still read normal when it should have gone to cold, i also grounded the oil pressure wire at the sending unit and all i got was a twitch of the needle, i think that the gauge cluster may be at fault, i wish that i knew someone with an 84 SR5 so i could try their cluster, oh well, i guess that i will have to buy aftermarket ones :pat:
