I also have been quoted the same thing recently. I am having a loud clicking noise. Apparently to access the flex plate (between the engine and tranny) they have to drop the transmission, about 12 - 15 hours of labor @ 80$ per hour. Is this a common problem? Most people have said to not get it fixed until it completely fails. Any ideas?

Oh, it's just the flywheel! thanks guys. If you must do this work, you may well just replace the crankshaft oil shield as well. Labor intensive though.
