What is "flex plate" problem

on '99-'00 4runner? a guy told me that the dealer quoted him $1k to replace the "flex plate" on his '99? what is this? I am missing something here?

I also have been quoted the same thing recently. I am having a loud clicking noise. Apparently to access the flex plate (between the engine and tranny) they have to drop the transmission, about 12 - 15 hours of labor @ 80$ per hour. Is this a common problem? Most people have said to not get it fixed until it completely fails. Any ideas?

Oh, it's just the flywheel! thanks guys. If you must do this work, you may well just replace the crankshaft oil shield as well. Labor intensive though.

yes, you can call it a "flywheel" but the exact term for AT vehicles is "flex plate."

take it to a regular shop, cost less.... IMHO

Well, it this happens to me, I don't mind dropping the tranny, there is a lot of clearance to work on the 4runner.
