Tranny problems...syncros....

I'm going to un-bolt my tranny and remove it from the engine to replace the clutch....how do i replace the syncros in the tranny...is it possible or do i need to take the tranny as a whole to a tranny shop? how much is this? It makes a grinding noise shifting to second...and is very hard to down shift into 3rd sometimes....you have to double clutch it and slow down speed....toyota tranny stuff works so mickymoused sometimes.

the synchros are internal, and unless you really know what oyu are doing, best left to the pros, its basically a rebuilt tranny at that point

It's usually a better bet to get one from a junk yard since the parts and labor can really add up. What year is it? If it is a 2nd gereration or better you can probably get a used trany with about 100k on it for less than a re-build and it has been my experience that they last unitll 200k before they start to mess up on you.

You should be able to find a used tranny with low miles for a 96. I would at least look into it and then get a quote from a shop on the price of a re-build and decide after that. If they cost the same, I would go for the re-build since you know the everything broken will be brand new after that.
