Tow Hooks

Hey guys,

Well since we had a big discussion about tow straps and all that earlier, I figured I would ask a question about tow hooks. I looked on the front of my rig, and this "eye tie-down" is actually bolted down. So, I was thinking about removing the "eye tie-down" and replacing it with an actual tow hook...should that be alright? Second question, are all tow hooks created equal, or is there something specific to look for? I don't know a whole lot about recovery, so I'm hoping you guys will be able to give me some info. Thanks for all of the help-

I don't know if there is a quality difference between hooks. I do know it is best to get those hooks that have that safety latch so the strap/cable/whatever doesn't fall off if there is any slack in the line.

Cody, here is a vendor that I have a link to in the Vendor Links section.
http://www.recoverygear.com/DEFAULT1.HTM

By looking in their recovery hardware section, I see these.

http://www.recoverygear.com/hardware.html

Perhaps something like that can be made to bolt on where you want it to?
Then use a shackle with it that is further down on that page.

I now know why my Masterpull synthetic line was so much money, the dang yellow hook and coupling are close to
$100 alone.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm thinking about picking this one from Warn (it's about halfway down the page).

Anyone else have any comments/ideas/suggestions?

I really appreciate the input.

Don't you already have a tow hook on the other side? Whats wrong with it? Whats the advantage of 2? I've never had a probelm with only 1 tow hook.

Ya I do, but I was going to add one just in case...the tow rope may not quite be long enough, it may be easier to get one side of my car into a tight spot to make a pull than another, etc. It's pretty much for a "just in case" situation.

Does anyone else have any more comments? Thanks guys-

keep the tie down. if your strap isnt long enough for the factory hook, move the vehicle that isnt stuck.
