Tires Cupping - Uneven Wear

Hello,

I have a set of Goodyear MTR's on my 99 4unner with an OME lift front and back. I have noticed that the tires are wearing unevenly - wearing more on the outside and unevenly (cupping?) I had an alignment after I installed the lift as well as a few (3-4) due to knocking it out while wheeling. I have had some trouble balancing the tires but don't know if this could cause the problem. Any ideas on why my tires are wearing like this or what I can do to correct it? Thanks.

check the tire pressure. Tires like that generally do some cupping from what i hear.

Tire pressure is good, Alignment is (or should be) good, Balancing is a little off (vibrates around 60 mph). I need new tires and want to figure this out before I get them and ruin them. Any ideas??

Cupping is when every other tread is taller, and it's usually caused by bad shocks.

I ruled that out as well as I installed OME shocks about 2 1/2 years ago - or about 35,000 miles ago.

if you push the bumper down then rapidly lift it up cna you make the shocks make any noises? If the shocks make any noise they are no good...

Cupping is shocks, air, or alignment. Balence issues would have huge patches missing or worn down iirc.

What kind of noise would that be?

The fluid passing internally when the shock cycles will make noise. Have a great day.

if the out side iz wearing faster that you need more air pressure an if the middle iz wearing faster then u have to much pressure.

Hmm interesting, I was told that if you could hear any sound at all that they were bad...hmm My monroe's (up front) didnt make a peep when they were new...now that they are about 2yrs old the make that characteristic fsssssssh ssssshhff when indexed.... And and dont let your neighbor see you pushing down and then lifting up repeatedly on your bumper, they might just think you went off the deep end...LOL

my mt/r's wore a little unevenly due to balancing issues.... theyre tough tires to balance. i have since had to swap 2 of those badly worn tires out due to vandalism on them (one stabbed, other just chopped at).. and have had NO issues since. perfect balance.

i went wheeling a week or so ago and knocked my alignment out so bad that my steering wheel was pointed at like 10 oclock to go straight

got it realigned and it runs beautifully right now.

You're right about that. I was trying to duplicate a "squeak" I heard one time. I was out there rocking it back and forth when I had that feeling I was being watched. I was... felt stupid... went back inside.

From what i have heard shocks are only good for about 35000 to 45000 Miles, so your shocks are probably on their last leg

How frequently do you rotate them? A mudder/aggressive tread tire like MTRs should be rotate more frequently than an all terrain especially considering the natural toe-in on a 4 wheel drive vehicle. I try to do mine every 4k or less.
Just an opinion and I'm usually wrong...

I second the rotation idea. I rotate my MT's every oil change- if not sooner.

Thanks for the help. I had a feeling that I wasn't rotating them enuf, probably about 2 times over the last 35,000 miles. Regardless, these are worn out and I will be ordering some silent armors, bfg at, or nitto terra grapplers before winter hits full on. I'll be sure to keep a close eye on the pressure, alignment and rotation for this set and see if it helps. Thanks again!!
