starting problems, no worky

hello friends, this morning when i went to get in my 4runner it decided it didnt want to start. i have read many posts similar to mine and it seems the problem is the starter. i'm just checking to see if anyone had any other ideas...i turned the key and the lights came on, but then it just clicked. multiple times of turning, the engine finally turned over. i checked the battery posts for corrosion, but thats all i've done so far. i noticed some have had the same problem. i hate paying big bucks for a starter. if thats what the problem is. anybody know of good, cheap starters, thanks much, Kyle

i have a 1990 4runner with135k on it. any help would be appreciated!

not to be insulting but are you sure your battery isn't on its last legs?? you might wanna try to get a reading on it to see if its old and tired

sometimes if the battery is low enough all the electricals will work and the starter will click but it wont turn over.

at least thats what it sounds like you're describing to me.

Did you try jumping it?
Make sure the battery is charged and load tested (despite when you bought it).
Then begin to tackle the starter.

Always check the obvious stuff first and avoid any headaches.

if everything else checks out ok, just change your starter contacts instead of getting a new one.

Toyota contacts are about $20 and your starter will be almost like new.

Regards,

Warren

well thanks for the help, i havent quite narrowed the problem down yet. checked my battery posts and connections, they were good. i havent gotten the battery checked by an actual machine, but my lights are bright as can be and all operations work normal,ie windows, radio, & filled it up battery with a little water. So do i take the battery in to get it checked as well as the starter? and where can i buy those contacts again? and just how hard is it to install these thingy majigs. thanks ~kyle BTW where the heck is the starter located? thanks

If you are in a big hurry and can't wait to order the parts from Roger, they are available at the dealer and also at local parts houses. They are apparently about the same as those used in the starters in Dodge minivans. When I asked for them and showed them the old ones the clerk assumed it was from a Dodge minivan as they get asked for them regularly for that vehicle. I had to take the whole starter in to them so they could get the numbers off of it and find the right contacts. They had them in stock and they were only a couple of bucks each.
