Squeaking belts
Does anyone know why my belts (not sure which one) may be squeaking? They aren't loose and its not that loud but you can hear it when standing near the hood area. Any idea's?
Thanks,

Its the Power steering belt. Its an ancient V-Belt design. Prone for this type of noise.
If your real careful, using a long flat blade screwdriver, while the engine is running, just kinda "scuff" the sides of the belt by applying pressure with the edge of the blade. Be real careful of the fan, and dont drop the screwdriver. This may be scary to do. It will remove the "glazing" of the edge of the belt.
I suppose an alternative to this could be taking the belt off and using some course sand paper to the belt and pulley could help.

Mine does it too, has forever. Usually a small mist of WD-40 shuts it up for a while but dont like that method for fear of throwing the belt. Jay thanks for the advice

My belts were squealing 2! I tried that belt dressing but it only made a mess! I just changed them all! It may be that they are old and dried out! It cost me about 15$ and an hour of my time to change all 3.

I got your P.M.- I paid about $5 a belt for all 3 belts. I got them at my local Auto Zone. Any auto parts store will carry them. Just give them your trucks make, model and year. Be sure to have them label all the belts for you, so you don't mix them up! If you have any more ?'s don't hesitate to ask.
