Replacing my auto hubs with manual-any gotcha's I need to know about?
I'm doing it this weekend, have a set of hubs off another 'Runner, already rebuilt and greased just waiting for me.
I've printed Metal22Lica's How-To and will have it with me, picking up the gaskets after work. I am just wondering if there are any GOTCHA!'s I need to worry about? I'm doing this 60Km's out of town, so running for parts isn't an easy task.

I have done this swap in a parking lot with no special tools and did not even think about using a jack to lift tire or the front end off the ground or even take the tire off. Just take your time and it will go smoothly....no gotcha!!! i can think of.

Do you have the nuts and lock washers from a manual set? I don't think the existing axlenuts from and autolocker hub will work, at least mine didn't

I did mine this past winter. The previous owner had mangled some of the cone washer's and I had a heck of a time getting some of them off. Luckily, the hubs I got off Ebay came with all the hardware so I had some extra cone washers. You might want to get some extra cone washers in case you mangle some of them. Scraping off some of the old gasket material might take some time around the studs so be prepared to take some time.

Yea, silicon should work fine, as long as it's just on the mating surfaces and not in the grease. I also did this on my 93, took about an hour. Very simple. Just pull off the ADD caps and install the new hubs.

hey twinkle!
did mine last fall, took about an hour to do both sides. the hubs must be in the free position to install them, otherwise the spring will push out the mechanism to try and engage the axle. as mentioned above, no need to jack or remove the wheel assy. the only thing you want to make sure of is, some sort of deflector to keep those cone washers from ejecting to parts unknown when they pop out! maybe use a towel or similar to hang infront of the hub when you are tapping them out.

Give them a good shot of penetrating oil before you get to them, and then just give the hub a good, sharp, rap...they'll FLY outta there.
Easy job...no special tools required.
