Rear hatch pin switch for cargo light

Where in the heck is the switch that activates the cargo light when you open the rear hatch up???? I can't find anything in the rear of the truck at all. 96 4Runner by the way. Is it built into the latch or something?

Assuming intermittent or no light when switch is on door open...check for broken or cracked wires under the boot between the hatch and body.

Light works when I choose ON, used to work when opening the hatch then became intermittent operation, now nothing. I think I need to clean the latch and wiring.

Update: Went out with the tools to start pulling the latch, opened the hatch and the light is working today. Go figure! Gonna clean it up anyways.

alright so i assume you learned that the switch is in the latch itself. i had one that was inop. i tried like hell to clean it with electronics cleaner. when that didn't work i tried brake parts cleaner. finally gave up and bought a used one off of somebody on the Northeast Toyota 4runner Owners Association

Yep, found that it's an integrated switch and is riveted together so no maintenance. I'll keep an eye out for another part.

my rear dome sounds like yours terminator-it only works in the on position at the light. I was thinking it was the dome light assembly itself until I stumbled across this thread.

Is it only activated by the rear hatch or are any of the other doors supposed to trigger the rear dome light?

Ron, only activated by the rear hatch.....I had the same problem, the light switched to on worked fine, switched to door did at first intermittently then not at all. It was a broken wire under the boot between the body and the hatch. I patched it and it works great now. I also found another broken wire that kept my rear defrost from working.
I know the problem can be caused by other things, but pulling the boot up to see is so easy and I've seen more than a few people with the same problem. It was actually another thread on it that got me off my own butt to check mine.

Edit: Found the thread I speak of...

DAGUM!!! Guess I'm going to pull the rubber boot back today and see if I can find a damaged wire or two. Hopefully I'll find out why my rear washer isn't working ehile I'm in there too.

I pulled the boot back and found a broken blue wire, partially broken green and a grey starting to split the insulation. Repaired said wires and no change, the hatch light won't come on when opening the door but works in the ON position. I pulled the boot off of the hatch side and couldn't find any damaged wires there so I'm stumped at this point.

Got ready to head out for Christmas at the parents and the hatch light worked and continued to work all evening. Go figure.

To those of you able to roll down your hatch window via the remote, how is this done? I can't seem to figure it out. I have the factory alarm system, I think it's called the RS3000 or something like that.

Ok terminator, you got me doing some head scratching. Checked mine again (don't actually use it much) and it's stopped working since that last repair, wires under the boot still intact.
So I got to doing some pulling apart. The switch you seek is indeed in the latch. I've taken pics. I've done some maybe not so smart taking apart but dang it, I wanted to see what I was working with and now you can too. I'm throwing my mess up on my build thread for all to see- I'll have to update as to whether the thing holds together or not. I am not recommending to do what I did but maybe being able to see the actual switch will be helpful....
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f200...1/index18.html starting with post 427, I thinks.

The light has been working perfect all day today. Love to see a link to what you did on your latch.
