Advice needed: Possibly buying a 1984 SR5 EFI pickup

I have the opportunity to buy a 1984 SR5 EFI 2wd pickup for $950Cdn. This pickup is at a local auction so I can't test drive it but the auctioneer is willing to let it go for this price (price includes auctioneer cut & 14% taxes). The engine looks clean (likely power washed), has new wires, rad, hoses...etc & 24x,xxxkm. Interior was plain jane, nothing special (can't remember if there was a tach or a deck). The long box has rust forming on both sides & the tailgate but no holes. The colour is two tone white & off white/gray but whatever.

I just need it for doing work around the house and hauling stuff like garden waste & the odd "help your friend move" scenario.

What items should checkout since I can't test drive it? Should I hold out for a better truck?

Please let me know cuz I have to make a decision by tomorrow.

TIA

PS: Awesome site. I'm hoping to get my first Yota truck, so please help.

check the frame. These trucks tend to get some frame rot. Also pop the hood and look for oil, if you see more oil than you should see, it might have a blown head gasket..STAY AWAY

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to have a better look at the truck tomorrow after work. A buddy of mine found a couple of solid sources for parts locally, so that's a definite plus.

I'm getting excited as this will be my first Yota pickup! I've already owned a couple of 85 Corolla GTS's which were awesome, but it's time for a change.

I had a 85 SR5 4x4 from 89 to 04. it was a great truck.The SR5's all have tach's i believe.As stated before,check the frame closely for seroius rust damage.Sheet metal shouldn't be to hard/expensive to replace.The 22re is a very reliable engine.Enjoy !

Excitement doesn't come close to describing how I feel. I know it's only a 2wd, but it's still a Yota pickup. I will thoroughly go over the engine and frame today & will hopefully drive off with it.

I read on one of the threads here about 84's fitted with 85 trim / parts? I'm wondering what production date I should on the B pillar. One last item, VIN decoding. Maybe I'll bring a cheat sheet to decipher what this truck was equipped with.

Much thanks!

I took a really good look at it today. The entire front end is pretty much rust free and the engine is running good, no chain rattle at all. Tranny shifted alright but probably could use new oil. As mentioned, the rear box is rusting but the frame is solid.

I'm hoping to finalize the deal tomorrow. Can't wait.

BTW, there was this black canister ziptied to the intake manifold with a line leading down. Not sure what that is or where it goes cuz all the other black canisters were in place??
