oil loss (do you agree?)

ok this is the last problem with my engine before it is rock solid.

i am losing oil at a decent rate.
i know there arent any leaks becuase no smoke is coming from the engine or my exh. and any spots on the ground (i have a clean drive way)

the head just got rebuilt so it isnt the valve seals so i am thinking it is the piston rings becuase the engine is pretty old (18 years) with 180,000 on the odo.

so does it sound like the rings or could it be something else
and how much should i expect to pay for ring replacement on a 22-re?

Hows the compression? Is there excessive crankcase pressure?

hmmmm

well i had the compression tested before i replaced the head gasket and it ran 180 across all 4 cylinders. so i replaced the head gasket and i couldnt imagine it losing compression. but the rig did sit for about 4 months or so with the head off if that makes any difference.

how do i test crank case pressure?

With 180k on the pistons and rings I would replace them.

I just did this umong otherthings to my 86 4-runner. I got 4 pistons and a ring set from LC Engeering for around $212.

You will have to have a machine shop fit the new pistons to the rods and make sure you have them check out the top end bearing and the rods for twist and bend.

Assuming the motor runs, you can check crankcase pressure be seeing how much oil and air pressure blows out of you oil fill cap, pvc hose, ect.

my only problem is this.....
i just spent the last 4 months getting this engine to run right and it is finally running like a dream, ive been through 2 jobs in the process and this is the first time i have had an actual pay check in almost a year (and feels pretty damn good at that) so, for me, to take my engine BACK apart would blow.
i will probably end up doing it myself to save the grip of cash its going to cost to have a shop do it all for me. do i have to take the engine out or can i do this while the engine is in? and do i have to pull the head? if i do can i just use the same gaskets that are on the various engine parts becuase i just put them in not more than 50 miles ago.

thanks alot for the help

how much is too much pressure coming out of the crankcase? i have a 22r and if i unplug my pcv, the engine dies

i have a breather on the front instead of the recirculating thing into the intake and if i take the breather off, it billows liek a smokestack....

My 22re slurped oil with no visible reason(120k).When i pulled the head,i noticed it had been rebuilt, but nothing was done to the lower end.At 180k you should bore it and replace the pistons/ring/rod brg's.You could try to save a few bucks and just hone /ring it but how long that would last is anyones guess.
We use a company who bores blocks in the car for about 100/150 bucks, but you do have to pull the head/pan/pistons.
No ,you should not re-use the headgasket.
