Noob here...
Had my 1988 PU for a year or so now. She is 4x4 and I picked her
up for about $800. Taken some work to get her road worthy. I
figure its just about done. I have been reading through some of
your posts here, and I have some questions.
What designates what generation your truck is? Maybe I didn't
ask that right. What years belong to which generations? Is there
any info you guys could offer on the 88 that I may not know about?
I will post up some pictures tomorrow, after I finish putting the
bucket seats in tonight. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forums
I only know how the 4Runner generations work, i'm not sure if the pickups are the same or not, but the 4Runners go like this...
1st Gen- 198?-1989
2nd Gen- 1990-1995
3rd Gen- 1996-2002
4th Gen- 2003-?
Someone please correct me if i'm wrong

Hello Castrol. The gens are different for the trucks than they are for the 4Runners.
As Braden pointed out the 4Runners are '84.5 to '89 for the first gen, then the rest of his info is right.
The trucks are:
79-83 1st gen truck
84-88 2nd gen truck
89-95.5 (pre-Tacoma); 3rd gen truck
95.5 Tacoma would be the 4th gen
I think the last two are correct of the Tacoma was introduced in mid '95.
Brian has some well detailed info here too.

Wow, just did a quick run through of the site here... Doesn't seem
to be a whole lot of older trucks on board here. Am I in the right
place? You guys mind if I hang out here and pick your brains? I am
from the school of, the cheapest way is the best way for me. I saw
some discussion of a $700 bumper. Hard to justify when you only
paid $800 for the whole truck. Like I said, I will get some pictures
tonight, after I finish putting the seats in. Found a roll bar not too
long ago and got that put in. I think the tires are flat spotted, as
the whole thing shakes like a wet dog at 55mph.
Thanks for the links and the info. I appreciate it. I wan't to go out
and do some 4 wheelin, but have yet to do so. I bought this truck
to be a beater, and it will most likely stay a beater, so if anyone knows
anybody down here in Houston, I would like to go out muddin one
day.

Hey, you need to get a hold of Matt (jx94148) on the forum here.
He doesn't have all that much into his older truck, and really likes to get out and wheel it.
He gets great deals on parts for it too.
Check out his sig file in his posts.
Corey
PS, there are quite a fw older trucks on here also.
Wrongway has an '85 truck.
I got to drive that a few weeks back. It was a blast.
Check the Off Road forum for my "Greenwater page is up" from Sept.
Took some vids of us driving it.

Yes, I will drive your Toy again
It was a blast.
You know what it weird?
I have driven sticks all of my life.
My 4Runner was the first automatic I have owned.
Driving my '90 5 speed I had form '90 until it's death in '98, you would think I would have remembered the shift pattern when I got into your rig.
I forgot
Theres an old saying. Use it, or lose it.
I think I lost it there for a few until it came back to me.
Next time we will have to try that hill with your tires aired down.
We should have. I could have shot them back up in a matter of seconds with the Power Tank.

$700 bumper
the bumper may have cost over $700, but look at the cost of your stock bumper. for my 99 taco, it was WELL over 700. closer to 800. so i got the ARB for less than i would pay for the stocker. good deal, if you ask me
also, welcome to the forums, and have fun with that old thing. i wish i had gotten an old truck, so i dont have to worry about the paint, etc.. the whole thing in general. also more $cash$ for mods.
have fun out there, and stay away from the trees :pat:

Hey man, welcome to the board. Yes alot of us do do expensive mods. but there are alot of cheeper ones here too(ex. Deck Plate Mod). If you just let people know what you are looking for and that you want to keep it as cheep as possible, everyone seems to come up with really good ideas on how to make it work for the best price, (another ex. my lift that's going on soon, cost me right around $400 or so). It all goes back to that good ol' saying of two minds are better than one, well here it's more like 500 or so minds are better than one. Everyone chimes in and helps one another, it's a great board.

Hey man welcome to the board.
I had an '86 4x4 P/U before getting my 90 Runner, It has a great truck, some days I really miss it.
There are a lot of really good guys here and a wealth of information (check the Tech. section and links) it's all here, you just gotta ask.

Welcome to the forum, dude!
Don't be shy about asking questions around here. I have been a member of this forum for about two months now and this group of folks is great. It is like having 500 friends, all into the same thing as you, that are more than happy to help you with whatever you need.
Don't let the fancy expensive mods fool you. Every last one of us in here is trying to figure out how to pay for our next toy for the Toyota. Hey, is that a quarter on the floor over there???

I did have to replace the front bumper on my truck, but thank
goodness it was only $45
It had been in a small accident in the front when I bought it, so I
had to do some work there as well. I have pics, and will be uploading
them shortly. I am VERY happy with the way the bucket seats came
out. Bet you can't tell by how much I talk about them.
HEH.
