My car whines when put in reverse...

My 3rd Gen whines when put in reverse...
Whenever I start the car up and put it in reverse, to back out of a parking spot etc, the car produces a whine or like a high pitched grind noise from the front, but as soon as I stop and put it in drive it goes away, any thoughts?

Maybe it was just in the older cars.
