My 4runner got rear ended this morning... Thank you trailer hitch!!!

As anyone living in or around Boston knows, driving is crazy around here. I was sitting at a red light after grabbing some breakfast this morning when, BAM!!!, My car got nailed from behind and pushed forward a couple of feet (even though my foot was on the brake). I signaled for the offender to pull over into a parking lot. Without getting into details, the guy was a real jerk about it. I saw the front of his beater (Early 90's Taurus station wagon) and the front bumper was V shaped and pushed in about 6 inches. Prepared for the worst, I checked out my freshly waxed rear bumper, and there wasn't a scratch on it! He must have hit he trailer hitch!!! I was so relieved. The ironic thing is, just yesterday I was contemplating taking the hitch off as I never use it and I noticed that most 3rd gens have hitch rust around here. Needless to say, I will be keeping it on!

Wow, you should certainly be thankful that you didn't get hurt. Get any pics of his bumper and yours ?

I would still file an accident report, especially since the guy was a jerk.

One reason is you should get the frame checked out on your rig, you never know.

Yes, hitches back there are good insurance.

I live in Worcester and had a seriously rusted hitch. I just sanded it down with various grits of paper, washed and dried it and then painted it with Rustoleum Satin Black (using a foam brush) and it looks good as new.

The hitch in the rear and the sliders tend to protect the mall crawler from idiots. I love having them just for the insurance...

man we had the same thing happen to us in San Diego 2 days after getting our runner, while in the McDonalds drive thru. Dork who hit us was also a PITA and his fancy Lexus was ripped up.

I hate jerks!

that hitch is a life saver!

last summer i had my bike rack that is a hitch mount on (no bike on it thankfully) and some kid in driver's ed rear ended me going about 25mph. i get out thinking the worst and there is one little indent on the rack from his license plate screw, he had a broken bumper. man i felt bad for that kid.
