MT-90 and manual transmission
Hey
It is getting high time to do some maintainance on the 4runner. I wanted to know whether Redlines MT-90 gear oil is still recommended to use with manual transmissions especially overfilling it a bit.
I have always had a somewhat hard time getting into first and second gear and have been using MT-90 for a while with some improvement but not fully fixing the knotchy feeling while shifting. Some on this board recommended overfilling the trans a bit to cure this. Has this caused any problems for those who tried it ? (Bob?).
Any other issues occured from using redline oil?
Perhaps my issues stem from clutch issues as I feel like the driveline somewhere isn't properly aligned.
Thanks

I overfilled mine with MT-90, but not by much. It still is a little notchy at times, but nothing that I can't live with. I have experienced no problems from the overfill. I guess the notchiness is just a characteristic that cannot be totally eliminated. More of a flaw, IMO. If someone finds a cure for it, I would like to know.

I think that double clutch takes all the "notchiness"out of my trany, but i would say that the 5 speed is light years a head of the J30 (3speed) and H41(NON-USA 4speed) that i have have in my Land Cruiser.

I don't see the point in adding extra if people say it's still notchy.
I mean, they designed it like this for a reason. I've seen this tranny with 200K - 300K miles on it with regular normal servicing.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but double-clutching won't do any good on a synchro-equipped gearbox.

I am not going to say it helped mine by overfilling. If anything, I will say it didn't hurt. It's just a wee bit notchy from time to time (always from 1st to 2nd), but I can definitely live with it.
I did not have the truck long when I put in the MT-90, so I had not driven it long enough to really get to know the shifting feel. I also replaced the shifter seat when I did the overfill. That also helped the shifting quality, as it was mostly disintegrated. You might want to consider doing that when you do the overfill. That way you can overfill through the shifter hole and replace the shifter seat all at the same time.

I replaced the shifter seat no too long ago and it didn't change it much as th old one wasn't broken anyway.
Fo-runna
Mine has been like this since I got it (for 45k) I just hope it is "normal" and not an issue a la BobSR5 transmission issues that came with bad clutch replacement job (not aligned properly I think). I will get a shops input on it when my upcomming service is done. Anyhow I can live with it if this is normal.
I also find I have to spray some oil into the clutch bell housing every 6 months or so to get rid of a sqeak from depressing the clutch. That actually seems to make the clutch a little easier to work. I might try and readjust the clutch pedal to see if I can get and little better shifting into 2nd. It isn't super bad, but often I feel I have to go slow to avoid grinding.
