Question Intermittent squeeling???

Recently colorado dipped into the negatives. I have never had my car in such cold weather.

The day that happened, I let the car warm up, which took alot longer than normal. Anyway, while driving I would hear a squeeling, it wasn't very loud, but almost like a bad belt or something. The squeeling isn't bad until 2200 rpms or more. I thought it would go away after it warmed up around here, but its now in the 50's and I am still getting the squeeling.

What could be the problem? Does extreme cold do something to the belts? Is there is somewhere else I should look? Also, I did replace the idler pulley bearing, but it was just a run of the mill bearing, do you think maybe the bearing wasn't designed to get that cold and now [i]it[i] is the thing squeeling?

Thanks for the help!

It could be the throw-out bearing also...but if it was, the noise would change when you step on the clutch.

I was getting some intermittent squealing in one of my 22R trucks, totally random, over the span of several months. I finally pinpointed mine to a bad alternator bearing, it would drag a little and make the belt squeal. Replaced the alternator (it was shot anyway) and that cured it. Good luck on finding your noise!

Not the throw out bearing, just had the entire clutch replaced with bearings back in october. When I listened to it, it sounded like it was coming from the passenger side headlight :wtf:

Strange though, because while the sound was evident yesterday, it never squeeked once today. I will see if it makes sound these next couple days.

No it doesn't have AC.

I am thinking it is the idler pulley bearing. I think because it is a generic bearing, it isn't designed to go that cold, so some of the oil in it probably got too thick and now that its worked through it with some warmer temps, its gone away.

If it does come back, I will look at the alternator (god I hope not, I've spent nearly $1500 on this thing in 4 months).

Thanks for the replies!

Hey, Dan-
It sounds like either a belt or an alternator bearing. The belts on my '83 squeel pretty bad. I need to replace them. When I had a Honda Civic as a commuter, the alternator bearing gave up. It squeeled until it warmed up, then it would just buzz. In your case, since it's RPM related, it would probably be the belts. Spray a bit of belt dressing on them and that should quiet them down until you replace them or tighten the tension.
