How Wide Is To Wide?

I have a 2000 4Runner with the 2.7L and I have a few questions regarding tires:

1. I currently run 235's. I would like to go to a larger tires size, 30 or 31's, but I'm concerned about rocks being thrown up against the body by the tires because I don't have fender flares. So how wide of a tire can I go to and still avoid this?

2. Can a 2.7L reasonable manage 30 or 31's?

Thanks

Not much to help, but to answer your question this is too wide:

you could get some 30x10.5 or 31x10.5's and you should still be inside your wheel well.

as far as can the 2.7 turn them, sure. People run 33, 35, 36 with 4.10's on the 22RE (2.4). If you go larger than 31's, you might want to start thinking about regearing.

your speedometer might be off a bit if you upgrade tire sizes but theres plenty of calculaters and simple tricks online to show you what your actually doing when your speedo says 35 mph.

it has a lot of torque still with the 33x12.50s, but no highway power whatsoever. Then again, i only have 3.42 gears. They suck, that's just the bottom line.

I don't mind my 22RE with 33's and stock gears, only since I don't drive alot on the freeway. 4.88s or 5.29's are in the picture but so are possible 35s.
