How crzy/hard would it be...
So I came back to my home town the other day...today i saw that a guy I sorta know is selling his 99 pre-runner. I don't now if he's aware that is has an e-locker, but I sure am. Would i be nuts to try and buy it from him? Would it be a huge deal? I know it would be a certain amount of work, but wouldn;t I essentially just switch our third members? (sounds kinda dirt don't it..). He could probably drive away pretty quickly,l whilst I tried to figure out the wiring.
My primary concern is that it would not be a problem to leave him with a perfectly driveable (just not lockable) truck.
Any thoughts?
spanks,
Ian

As far as I know, you can't just switch the 3rd's. The non-trd ring is an 8.4" while the TRD one is 8". You'd need to switch the entire axle, and possibly the front to match gearing.
Nab the locker ecu and switch too.

I guess I'll ask him how much he wants for it, then look for 96runners thread on the swap (I ran across it once before).

If you have an open diff'd Taco right now, you cannot, under any circumstances, get that third in your current axle.
You have an 8.4" diff, like all open diff'd Taco's and all Tundra's.
The e-locker is an 8" diff like all 4-Runners.

Yeah, I swapped the entire front and rear axles/diffs from a donor rig to mine and vice versa. If there is anything you need to know or have any specific questions, let me know and I will do what I can to help.
I bought the donor rig for $10K, swapped the front and rear as mentioned, then re-sold the donor rig for $10,300.
If you pull an ECU from an ABS equipped donor rig, it will trip the ABS light. Therefore I could not grab the locker ECU from the donor rig. I had to buy one off Jim here on Yotatech.
The best way to check the ratio is to jack up the rear, mark the shaft at the third, and have someone spin a wheel two full revolutions.
My ratio was different than the donor rig, hence the front and rear swap requirement.
