Wow that is a pretty sweet setup if it worked!
Would be very cheap to throw together and the welds looked pretty good too.

I didn't read the whole thread, but is he using a gasoline motor to turn the alternator pully? Scratch that, looks like he has a belt-driven air compressor motor. Dang, it'd be kind of fun to make one just to fool around with it.

It looked like it was or could be done both ways.

Gas Engine or with an AC

I can do both stick and TIG welding with my on-board alternator/welder unit:

Premier Power Welder install

For TIG, I would need to add the torch and shielding gas setup, but it does have the high frequency ripple for starting the arc, that helps in both TIG and stick welding.
