Help w/ 22re injection
Hi guys,
I just got an '87 pickup with a 22re engine. Very low miles and mint. The problem is that a pack rat has lived under the hood for the last few months and it won't start. I checked the ignition and it will start when I squirt fuel in the intake but I am not familiar with this injection system. Can one of you Toyota experts give me an overview of the system. Fuel pump (in tank?) relay? Checking injector pulse? I repaired a couple of chewed wires that didn't go to any electronics and can't see any more on top and I can't get under it without towing it somewhere else and I'd like to drive it home, if possible. Any help is appreciated.

Fuel pump in tank, see page below for troubleshooting ideas:

There was also a *long* thread in the last month on this very topic right here, the SEARCH button would help you find it.

Great site! Thanks. The rat keeps trying to move back into the truck and is avoiding traps and bait to get the little guy. I just hope that he doesn't manage to ride home with me when I get it going.

I ran the pump and have pressure on the fuel rail (nasty smelling fuel). I'm still looking for some help with the injector logic. I'll check for stored codes tomorrow and see if that tells me anything.

No codes stored. Just a single flash about 1.5 seconds apart. Still can't find any more chewed wires but the stupid rat is still trying to rebuild the nest every night. He ate a whole container of poison a couple of days ago but was chipper this morning when I went by to check. I'll tow it home as soon as I can get to it. At least I'll be able to get it off the ground so I can see if anything is chewed up under it.

I got it home and I think that the fuel pressure is too low. I also found out it's not an '87. It's titled as one but epa sticker says '86. Does anyone know what the fuel pressure is supposed to be for a 22re? I've searched all over and not gotten a good answer. One post said 3.5 to 4.5 psi but I've not heard of an injection system with that low pressure. Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Fuel pressure on the 22RE is in the range of 28-38 psi, more or less. It is controlled by the fuel pressure regulator and that is modulated by engine vacuum, more pressure when engine vacuum is low (i.e. high engine loads) and lower when engine vacuum is high (i.e. light engine loads). I have a fuel pressure gauge on my '85 and that is about the pressure range I see.

Thanks alot 4crawler. That's just what I need. I had found several different numbers and those sound more realistic. I don't have anywhere near that at the rail and there is no filter on this truck where it's supposed to be (on the frame rail under the pass. seat) or anywhere in the line to the fuel rail. I don't see where one was bolted in the past so I'm kind of baffled. I know some later Toyotas had filters in the tank but I haven't heard of that on any trucks. I'm going to try to get the tank down and pull the pump and see what's in there and then install a filter in the pressure line.

Thanks again. Everything that I had read or seen had it on the frame rail. I bet it's fun to get to it, under the intake. It may be so clogged that it's dropping pressure at the rail. I have probably 3 or 4 psi now at the cold start injector. I bought a wix filter for it and I'll install it before I pull the tank.

Got the pump out. It's cooked. Ordered new pump. I don't see how this was caused by the rat but he did enough damage to wiring under the hood to make my life miserable for a couple of days. I'll change the filter when I can get it on a lift. Thanks again 4crawler, you're a big asset to this forum. Let me know if you need any help with detroit iron. I've been building sbc's for over 30 years.

Got the pump in this morning and after checking for leaks, the little guy started first rattle out of the box and ran perfectly. I still have to check out the suspension, driveline, etc. but I'm a happy camper.
