Funny ticking noise coming from the drivers side rear...
2002 4runner limited 4x4, stock suspension and stock tires for now... Bought as Toy certified used so I still have about 2 years and 40K miles of powertrain warranty left.
I've noticed (and others I was wheeling with this past saturday, but this isn't when it started.) a strange ticking noise coming from the driver's side rear. It's not exhaust vibration, either. It makes the noise when I'm in park, can't speak to whether or not it does it in gear as well.
it's about a 1Hz tick (one tick/second) and does not seem to be RPM related (the idle can shift while it's in park and the noise remains constant.) It's not loud... imagine if someone were lightly tapping the back sheet metal every second or so, that's basically it. if it would help, I can post a sound recording of it.
Someone I was wheeling with (yotafun) thought it might be an ABS contact or something. Honestly I have no idea what it is, my brakes and everything about the truck work just fine. Just wondering what it is, and if I should be worried.
Thanks!

And that's in the back? I always thought that crap was in the front. Is that what that black cylinder (or mud colored as the case may be ) is near the spare tire?

Get a set of these and you'll find it faster than a kid hops out of bed on Christmas day:
I betcha a box of doughnuts its the VSV that you can see attached to the back side of the evap can in this pic (the one with 2 big vac lines on it):
You think its loud now try mounting it directly to your firewall like I did here:
It drove me crazy in just a few days, lol. I wrapped it in rubber to shut it up:

Arright, I've gotta run home over lunch but I'll rig up a stethescope...
edit: come to think of it, there's also a wierd whirrrrrrr.... CLICK! when I come to a full stop on the breaks about 60% of the time. I figured it was some sort of vacuum pump or release valve, sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the eingine compartment. if this fixes both I'd be quite pleased.

well that should make it easier to figure out... since the tank isn't way far back, maybe it's not the fuel pump. It's freezing friggin cold out now (snow in april? WTF? it was 70F on monday!) so I will attempt when it warms up.

I will do that for sure avy..
maybe if it is the fuel pump, that's part of the power train, thusly covered under warranty... I hope.
If not, stock one goes out and 190GPH walbro goes in... just in case i ever feel like stuffing a supercharger on it.

Was there any resolution to this or is something that we have to live with. Although not a horrible sound, but it's definitely with the brakes. I found if you just turn on the vehicle and pump the brakes 3 or more times that sound will kick on and then kick off. After its off I can kick it back on just by pressin the brakes (not in rapid succession by any means) again. Its definitely engine bay, right behind the firewall passenger side.
